Nursing Executive Director Job Description

Mass General Brigham is seeking a highly skilled and experienced Nursing Executive Director to lead our nursing team in Oak Bluffs, Massachusetts.

Job Summary

The Nursing Executive Director will oversee the clinical operations and personnel management of our primary care and specialty practices. This role will ensure the delivery of high-quality, patient-centered care by collaborating with nurses, physicians, and other clinical and administrative leaders to achieve program goals and objectives.

Key Responsibilities
  • Develop and mentor a high-performing nursing team to manage budgets and resources efficiently.
  • Facilitate the design of delivery systems that assure each patient receives individualized care and service consistent with the mission, values, and vision of MVH.
  • Collaborate in the development of a strategic direction for patient care and the practice of Nursing and collaborate with peers on the implementation of strategies to achieve these goals.
  • Participate in shaping and promoting a nursing culture that recognizes excellence in clinical nursing practice; participatory decision-making around practice issues and the work environment; research and theory-based practice; care delivery systems; and human resource development and management.
  • Develop and implement methodologies for assuring compliance with patient care standards, laws, regulations, collective bargaining agreements, and the standards and requirements of the various professional organizations and regulatory agencies.
  • Create, develop, and implement strategies to improve the quality of service, quality of patient care, and the level of patient and staff satisfaction in all areas of assigned responsibility.
  • Evaluate and promote patient, family, and employee safety and design improvements to mitigate risk and harm.
  • Actively build inter-professional relationships to assure dialogue around patient care and issues to enhance outcome-driven patient care.
  • Represent the discipline of Nursing as directed by the CNO.
  • Collaborate with internal professional providers and with other agencies and groups within the community to assure patient care is coordinated across the continuum.
  • Participate in and provide leadership to hospital committees.
  • Collaborate with Nursing School clinical faculty and MVH Nursing staff to provide and evaluate clinical experiences with schools of nursing.
  • Determine resources that are needed to meet patient care and quality of work-life goals in collaboration with clinical and administrative leadership team.
  • Collaborate with inter-professional colleagues in developing financial plans for new and existing programs.
  • Provide leadership to clinical and nursing management staff in the development and management of capital and operational budgets.
  • Allocate and monitor resources to achieve productivity, customer service, and staff development goals.
  • Participate in determining and managing nursing resource requirements and play an active role in recruitment, retention, and development of programs that meet these requirements.
  • Participate in the development, implementation, and monitoring of performance standards and performance management systems to assure continuous improvement on the quality of service and care.
  • Provide leadership to nursing and clinical management staff in the selection, evaluation, promotion, and termination of employees.
  • Actively engage in and promote pro-active employee relations in all spheres of influence.
  • Ensure staff communication channels are effective and that issues are heard and acted upon.
  • Create an environment that recognizes, encourages, and rewards excellent performance.
  • Facilitate, coach, encourage, and mentor staff and managers in developing the skills and abilities they need to improve their ability to deliver quality patient care.
  • Assure regulatory compliance through staff education.
  • Assure development and implementation of educational and orientation programs, which meet the educational needs of staff and other opportunities to staff.
  • In the spirit of lifelong learning, actively seek out opportunities for personal and professional growth.
  • Represent MVH Nursing on internal, corporate, and external committees, task forces, and professional organizations.
  • Use management information to determine trends, forecasts, and marketing strategies which have implications for the institution's operational and strategic direction.
  • In collaboration with medical and administrative staff, routinely participate in the strategic planning process and in designing improvements based on data.
  • Develop and manage an operational plan.
  • Participate in emergency preparedness activities.
Requirements
  • BSN required (Current registration in nursing in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts)
  • Masters Degree in Nursing, Business Administration, or other related degree strongly preferred; enrollment in a masters program after 1 year required
  • Minimum of 10 years of nursing experience
  • Minimum of 5-7 years of experience in nursing administration
