The City of Sugar Land, TX is seeking a highly organized and detail-oriented Detention Officer to join our team. As a Detention Officer, you will play a critical role in ensuring the safety and security of inmates, as well as maintaining the cleanliness and orderliness of the control center.
Key Responsibilities- Conduct headcounts and door checks on a regular basis to ensure the safety and security of inmates.
- Restrain inmates as needed in any confrontation with staff or other inmates.
- Fingerprint, photograph, and complete required paperwork for inmates.
- Feed and supervise the hygiene of prisoners.
- Inspect cells visually and physically to ensure cleanliness and orderliness.
- Identify prisoners requiring transport to a County facility or hospital.
- Prepare reports as required on activities, incidents, searches, and other functions.
- Assist other employees with their duties as needed.
- Log activities of inmates as required.
- Notify the Detention Supervisor when criminal activity, contraband, or escape attempts are detected.
- Required to work as an essential employee before, during, and after an emergency or disaster.
- Stay abreast and comply with all City and departmental policies and procedures.
- Perform other job-related duties as directed by the Chief of Police or his/her designee.
- High School Diploma or GED Certificate required.
- One year of experience in a public safety-related or customer service position is required.
- Municipal government customer service experience preferred, but not required.
- Additional relevant work experience resulting in acceptable proficiency levels in the above knowledge, skill, and education requirements may be substituted in lieu of specific education requirements.
- Valid Texas Class C Driver License.
- Texas Commission on Law Enforcement (TCOLE) Certified Jailer is preferred.
