The Registered Nurse (RN) plays a critical role in assessing, planning, implementing, and evaluating individualized patient care within the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU). This position operates under the guidance of the Nurse Manager or Clinical Coordinator and includes supervising non-RN staff while ensuring adherence to unit policies and procedures.
As a charge nurse, you will delegate responsibilities and oversee unit activities, while also being adaptable to work across various nursing units as needed. Additional duties may be assigned to maintain a high standard of service.

Responsibilities:
- Continuously assess the physical and psychosocial status of patients throughout their care journey.
- Develop, communicate, and document personalized care plans that address specific patient needs and desired outcomes, involving patients, families, and the healthcare team.
- Implement and coordinate care plans in collaboration with the healthcare team.
- Evaluate the effectiveness of care plans, patient responses, and readiness for discharge, making necessary adjustments and referrals.
- Plan educational initiatives based on the unique learning needs and readiness of patients and families, documenting outcomes effectively.
- Serve as a preceptor for new staff members.
- Assume charge nurse responsibilities as required.
- Meet performance expectations in areas such as Customer Service, Teamwork, Resource Utilization, and Professional Development.
- Perform additional duties as directed to ensure the smooth operation of the unit.
- Demonstrate proficiency in the insertion and maintenance of neonatal peripheral intravenous lines, as well as obtaining neonatal lab samples and managing central intravenous lines.
- Exhibit competency in the management of neonates requiring respiratory support, including suctioning and chest physiotherapy.
- Provide initial care and stabilization for neonates during high-risk deliveries.
- Function effectively as an RN during neonatal transport.
- Incorporate principles of developmentally supportive and family-centered care.
- Support breastfeeding initiatives in the NICU through collaboration with Lactation Consultants as needed.
Qualifications:
EDUCATION
Graduation from an accredited nursing program; BSN preferred. Proficient in electronic patient record systems and internet research for patient care literature.
EXPERIENCE
Preferred recent experience in level 2 or 3 NICU settings.
LICENSURE
Current Registered Nurse license in the State of Connecticut.
SPECIAL SKILLS
BLS certification required. NRP certification must be obtained within six months of hire. NICU certification is required within two years of completing orientation.
