Key Responsibilities

  • Traveling as needed, potentially up to 50% of the time, with provisions for meals and lodging.
  • Climbing trees exceeding 40 feet using ropes or spurs, ensuring safety through the use of harnesses and appropriate rigging.
  • Trimming or removing branches and limbs using both power tools and hand saws.
  • Treating cut surfaces to prevent fungal and insect infestations.
  • Lowering cut branches safely using ropes and occasionally felling entire trees.
  • Planting, cultivating, and irrigating trees as necessary.
  • Clearing brush and weeds along transportation rights-of-way and state facilities.
  • Maintaining and caring for climbing and trimming equipment.
  • Implementing traffic control measures as required.
  • Utilizing aerial equipment and pneumatic/hydraulic tools effectively.
  • Operating brush chippers to dispose of cut vegetation.
  • Performing routine equipment maintenance, including servicing and minor repairs.
  • Keeping accurate records of crew activities, equipment checks, and material usage.
  • Handling snow removal and salt spreading operations as needed.
  • Collaborating with roadside spray teams to apply chemicals for pest and weed control.

Working Conditions

This position requires a valid and unrestricted Class C driver's license. Candidates should provide detailed information regarding their climbing experience, including the height of trees climbed and the tools utilized.

Minimum Qualifications

  • At least nine months of experience in a similar role within California state service, or
  • One year of relevant tree trimming experience, specifically involving trees over 40 feet in height.

This position is subject to specific employment conditions and may require participation in a bidding process based on seniority.
