Salary Range: $26.91 to $31.40 per hour, based on experience and qualifications.

Responsibilities

The National Wildlife Health Center, part of the U.S. Department of the Interior, plays a crucial role in addressing health challenges related to wildlife and ecosystems. The Center engages in research and technical assistance to combat infectious diseases affecting wildlife populations. Our multidisciplinary team is dedicated to providing comprehensive disease diagnosis, field response, and training to enhance wildlife health management.

As a Facilities Maintenance Specialist, your key responsibilities will include:

  • Maintaining and operating HVAC/R systems to ensure optimal performance.
  • Supporting laboratory systems to facilitate research and operational needs.
  • Performing preventative maintenance on equipment such as steam boilers, hot water systems, incinerators, and generators.
  • Installing, modifying, and repairing electrical systems, diagnosing issues, and executing necessary repairs.

Physical Requirements: The role demands significant physical effort, including lifting and moving objects up to 50 pounds without assistance. It involves prolonged periods of standing, walking, and working in various positions, including bending and climbing. The work environment may be crowded and noisy, with exposure to dust and fumes.

Work Environment: This position involves both indoor and outdoor work. Indoor tasks may involve exposure to unpleasant odors and noisy conditions, while outdoor responsibilities may require working in various weather conditions. Safety gear may be necessary when handling hazardous materials or operating machinery.

Employment Conditions

  • Must be suitable for Federal employment, as determined by a background investigation.
  • Selected candidates may be subject to a one-year probationary period.
  • A valid state driver's license and a safe driving record are required.

  • Work will be conducted in a laboratory setting, necessitating vaccinations against specific pathogens.

Qualifications

While there is no specific length of experience required, candidates must demonstrate the ability to perform the essential functions of the position with minimal supervision. Experience in mechanical, electrical, or plumbing repair is essential.

Education

Relevant experience, including volunteer work, will be considered in evaluating qualifications.
