Job Responsibilities and Qualifications

Under the direct supervision of the Cardiology Nurse Manager or preceptor, the Cardiac Ultrasound Technician is responsible for accurately conducting echocardiograms on patients of all ages, including infants, adolescents, and adults.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Evaluating information and providing calculations to assist the physician in delivering appropriate care and treatment.
  • The Cardiac Ultrasound Technician must be proficient in performing transthoracic, transesophageal, and stress echocardiography.
  • The technician will demonstrate competence in conducting these procedures in the Echo Lab, at the patient's bedside, or as part of invasive cardiovascular procedures in the Cath Lab, EP Lab, or Operating Room.
  • The technician will show proficiency and safety in the IV administration of cardiac contrast agents (saline and Perflutren), starting IVs as necessary, and will demonstrate competency in the high-level disinfection of transesophageal (TEE) probes.
  • Responsibilities include tasks that ensure the department operates effectively and efficiently, including maintaining patient records.
  • The technician will undertake any additional activities assigned by the Cardiology Nurse Manager, including outreach assignments.
  • The technician will respond within 30 minutes when on standby call.

Required Qualifications:

  • High School diploma or equivalent. Graduate of a cardiac sonography program and/or on-the-job training under the supervision of a Registered Diagnostic Cardiac Sonographer.
  • Demonstrated technical knowledge in performing patient procedures as required in each clinical area.
  • Current registry through the American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers (ARDMS) or Cardiovascular Credentialing International (CCI) with active status in Adult Echocardiography preferred.
  • For new graduates, must obtain registry within 12 months of eligibility.
  • American Heart Association Basic Life Saving certification required within 30 days of hire.
  • One year of echo experience or a graduate of a cardiac sonography program with combined training and experience of at least one year.
