Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled and detail-oriented Laboratory Technician II to join our team at the University of Rochester. As a key member of our laboratory team, you will be responsible for the pre-analytical processing of patient specimens, ensuring accurate and timely results.

Key Responsibilities
  • Sample Management
    • Receive and prioritize specimens from inpatient and outpatient locations
    • Ensure specimen integrity and take appropriate action to prevent delays
    • Track and verify receipt of batches and specimens
    • Prepare specimens for transport to specialized testing areas
    • Manage sample archive storage and disposal
  • Patient Registration and Specimen Log-in
    • Register patient information into the Hospital Information System
    • Identify special registration and billing information
    • Log-in laboratory procedure codes and enter comments from requisitions/physician orders
    • Document discrepancies in patient information, test requests, or specimen information
  • Administrative Support
    • Answer telephone calls and provide routine information to customers
    • Answer questions from specimen collection locations regarding transport and minimum volumes
    • Inform ordering providers of test unavailability and work to remedy the situation
    • Take action to meet customer requests, including test add-ons and call transfers
    • Scan requisitions into the scanning system and participate in Quality Assurance data collection
  • Lab (Technical) Support
    • Assist technologists in pre-analytical processing of select tests
    • Work with healthcare providers to troubleshoot problem specimens and clarify test selection
    • Load continuous blood culture systems and pre-analytical automation systems
    • Monitor environment and equipment temperatures and humidity
    • Troubleshoot out-of-range conditions and document results
Requirements
  • Associate's degree or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Customer service experience preferred
  • Knowledge of medical terminology and anatomy/physiology a plus
