Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled Occupational Health Nurse to join our team at Medstar. The successful candidate will be responsible for providing comprehensive nursing care, preventive health information, and guidance to associates who become ill or are injured at work.

Key Responsibilities
  • Health and Wellness
    • Contribute to the achievement of established department goals and objectives, adhering to department policies, procedures, quality standards, and safety standards.
    • Accurately document all data into the associate electronic medical record (OHM) and access documents in other appropriate databases.
  • Case Management
    • Collaborate with NP/PA, Risk Management, WC TPA, and medical providers to monitor the progress of case management and coordinate treatment plans.
    • Develop, plan, recommend, and implement wellness programs to improve the health and work-life balance of associates.
  • Occupational Health
    • Implement health compliance programs required for hospital workers, including mandatory influenza programs, N95 fit testing, hearing conservation, TB testing, and vaccination requirements.
    • Liaise with entities/departments to evaluate the safety of the workplace and collaborate with managers in injury prevention measures and departmental action planning.
  • Return to Work
    • Manage the temporary modified duty program to ensure safe and timely return to work.
    • Evaluate associates' ability to return to work full-duty or in modified work capacity after an extended absence.
  • Pre-Employment Physicals
    • Perform pre-employment physicals to determine the ability of the individual to perform the job for which they are applying.
    • Screen for infectious disease symptoms, serious medical conditions, or disabilities.
  • Medication Administration
    • Prepare and administer medications, including vaccinations and tuberculosis skin testing, according to department policy/procedure.
    • Manage medication and medical supply inventory.
  • Exposure Follow-Up
    • Provide exposure follow-up, including appropriate labwork, first aid, and/or prophylaxis administration.
    • Provide necessary exposure counseling and inform associates of necessary exposure follow-up.
  • Substance Abuse Monitoring
    • Provide oversight and compliance tracking for mandatory substance abuse monitoring.
  • Communication and Collaboration
    • Participate in meetings and on committees and represent the department and hospital in community outreach efforts.
    • Participate in multi-disciplinary quality and service improvement teams.
Requirements
  • Education
    • Bachelor's degree or comparable experience required.
    • BSN preferred.
  • Experience
    • 3-4 years Nursing experience required.
    • 1-2 years Occupational health experience preferred.
  • Licenses and Certifications
    • RN - Registered Nurse - State Licensure and/or Compact State Licensure Valid RN license in the State of Maryland or DC required.
    • COHN - Certified Occupational Health Nurse preferred.
    • (includes BLS and NRP) for healthcare providers from either the American Heart Association (AHA) or American Red Cross within 90 Days required.
  • Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
    • Good physical assessment skills, triage, and first aid skills.
    • Understanding of workers compensation and OSHA regulations.
    • Good patient education skills.
    • Strong communication skills and intermediate computer skills.
