Job Description

A key role in this position is to gain hands-on experience in the essential functions of a Driver, including the accurate and timely distribution of products to various customer locations. As a Driver Trainee, you will be exposed to warehouse and other operational functions as part of your development process to become a McLane Driver.

Below are some key aspects of this job:

  • The pay rate while in training is $22,000 per year. Once training is completed, Drivers can earn an average annual salary of $100,700.
  • The schedule for this position is 3rd shift dispatch.
  • This role requires a CDL-A license.

Essential Job Functions

In this role, you will train alongside a Driver Trainer to acquire the skills necessary to perform the following functions:

  • Maneuvering the tractor into position to attach the trailer and secure it with lines.
  • Operating the truck in a safe manner, complying with all local, state, and federal regulations, as well as company policies.
  • Inspecting the tractor-trailer equipment for defects before and after each trip and submitting a DOT inspection report detailing its condition.
  • Using the Driver Delivery Handheld (DDH) to document delivery receipts, product temperatures, and exceptions; inspecting the trailer to ensure that the product is secure for transport without damage.
  • Riding and training with the Driver Trainer to various destinations, gaining knowledge of commercial driving regulations and observing the Driver's skill in starting the engine properly, approaching intersections, making turns, backing up, parking, and maneuvering the vehicle on the road and at customer premises.
  • Maintaining a driver log according to DOT regulations, documenting delivery receipts, product temperatures, and exceptions.
  • Assisting the Driver in unloading the trailer and delivering the product to customer premises.
  • Providing customer service, including on-time delivery of undamaged product, handling product returns, and issuing valid customer credits.
Requirements

To be successful in this role, you must meet the following requirements:

  • A high school diploma or GED is preferred.
  • You must be at least 21 years old.
  • You must meet the eligibility criteria outlined in the McLane Transfer and Promotion Policy.
  • You must be able to select, load, unload, and/or deliver all products ordered by McLane customers.
  • You must be able to read and comprehend labels, instructions, and bills of lading.
  • You must be able to perform mathematical calculations to verify quantities of product.
  • You must be able to communicate effectively with customers, management, and other team members.
  • You must be able to safely drive a tractor-trailer, use a two-wheeled dolly, ramp, and onboard PeopleNet devices.
