As a Shipfitter, you will play a crucial role in the construction, modification, and repair of ships. Your expertise in assembling, fabricating, and installing metal components will be essential to ensuring the structural integrity and functionality of these vessels.
Responsibilities:- Precisely position, align, and weld metal parts according to blueprints and specifications using jigs, welding torches, and hand tools.
- Verify the accuracy of workpieces against established standards using measuring instruments such as squares, rulers, and tapes.
- Tack-weld fitted parts together for secure joining prior to final welding.
- Lay out and inspect metal stock or workpieces to ensure compliance with project requirements.
- Utilize jacks, turnbuckles, wedges, drift pins, pry bars, and hammers to align and fit parts according to specifications.
- Mark bending and cutting lines on metal stock, considering factors such as material thickness, machine shrinkage, and welding requirements.
- Securely position braces, jacks, clamps, ropes, bolt straps, or bolt parts in place for welding or riveting operations.
- Interpret engineering drawings and blueprints to determine material needs and task sequences.
- Move metal components into position manually or using hoists and cranes.
- Operate fabricating machines such as brakes, rolls, shears, flame cutters, grinders, and drill presses to shape and assemble metal components.
Successful candidates will possess a strong understanding of shipbuilding practices and industry safety standards. A proven track record in shipfitting with 3 or more years of experience is required.
