Job Summary

We are seeking a skilled Maintenance Worker to join our team at the National Park Service. As a Maintenance Worker, you will be responsible for performing a variety of tasks related to the maintenance and repair of grounds, walkways, exterior structures, campgrounds, buildings, and related utilities.

Key Responsibilities
  • Perform carpentry repairs using simple measures and hand tools on tasks such as replacing broken planks on picnic tables, repairing siding or wooden chairs with nails, reapplying/repairing molding, or installing shelving, signage, or items like whiteboards.
  • Repair minor wood structures, such as park benches, waste baskets, and signs.
  • Perform simple operational maintenance on heating, venting, and air conditioning equipment by cleaning out chiller condenser tubing, cleaning the cooling tower, inspecting and replacing filters.
  • Excavate broken water valves and sprinkler heads and tighten simple connections to stop leaks.
  • Prepare ground to lay sod or plants flowers and shrubs using provided and simple drawings.
  • Assist in planting, transplanting, fertilizing, mulching, watering, and pruning under specific instructions and under supervision.
  • Assist with various landscape activities such as plant propagation, survival, herbicide spraying, and other routine maintenance operations.
  • Clean and prepare buildings, walls, trim, and floor surfaces for painting by sanding, scraping, or wire brushing.
  • Inspect, maintain, and replace light bulbs in a variety of fixtures both inside and outside.
  • Comply with stipulations in lighting plans as applicable (e.g., museums, displays, special applications).
  • Remove damaged portions of walls or other similar architectural features in preparation for repair of damage.
  • Mow lawns using large, complex industrial-type (walking and riding type) power mowers and small domestic power mowers.
  • Perform routine maintenance and repair on equipment.
Requirements
  • U.S. Citizenship required.
  • Appointment subject to background investigation and favorable adjudication.
  • Meet Selective Service Registration Act requirement for males.
  • Selectee will be required to participate in the Direct Deposit Electronics Funds Transfer Program.
  • You will be required to operate a government (or private) motor vehicle as part of your official duties; a valid driver's license is required.
  • You will be required to submit a Motor Vehicle Operator's License and Driving Record.
  • You must also submit (within a State sealed envelope or submitted directly by the State authorities), and at your own expense, all certified driving records from all States that disclose all valid driver's licenses, whether current or past, possessed by you.
  • You will be required to wear a uniform and comply with the National Park Service uniform standards. A uniform allowance will be provided.
  • You may be required to work on-call, evenings, weekends, holidays, overtime, and shift work. Emergency/Essential Personnel position.
  • If you are a new employee or supervisor in the Federal government, you will be required to complete a one-year probationary period.
  • Applicants must be at least (1)18 years old or (2) at least 16 years old and: (a)Have graduated from high school or been awarded a certificate equivalent to graduating from high school; or (b)Have completed a formal vocational training program; or (c)Have received a statement from school authorities agreeing with their preference for employment rather than continuing their education; or (d)Be currently enrolled in a secondary school and either work only during school vacation periods or work part-time during the school year under a formal student employment program.
