Job Responsibilities:

  • Conduct police and custodial duties in alignment with the department's mission, goals, and policies, while adhering to applicable federal, state, and local laws.
  • Respond to requests for police assistance from citizens and relay pertinent information to the appropriate personnel.
  • Engage in routine patrols to identify and address actual or potential crime-related situations.
  • Perform preliminary and comprehensive inquiries into possible law violations, gathering and verifying factual information from involved parties.
  • Establish probable cause, apprehend suspects, and take offenders into custody.
  • Complete all required reports in accordance with departmental protocols.
  • Present factual evidence in court regarding field observations and investigations of criminal cases.
  • Serve civil and court processes as required.
  • Initiate public service activities and respond to inquiries for information and assistance.
  • Pursue professional development to enhance both academic and non-academic police-related skills.
  • Maintain regular, reliable, and punctual attendance.
  • Fulfill the physical demands of the position and work within established working conditions.

Qualifications:

  • Knowledge of relevant federal, state, and local laws, as well as police-related constitutional and judicial rulings.
  • Understanding of modern investigatory procedures and equipment, including evidence care, collection, and preservation.
  • Familiarity with criminal justice and social services systems, along with emergency service procedures, rules, and regulations.
  • Ability to think critically under stress and relate effectively to others in tense situations.
  • Capacity to adapt quickly to changing conditions requiring diverse responses.
  • Ability to endure prolonged periods of physical and mental stress.
  • Comprehension and application of departmental policies, rules, and regulations.
  • Effective communication skills, both verbal and written.
  • Possession of a valid Washington State driver's license.

Eligibility: To qualify for the deputy list, candidates must achieve a minimum score of 70 percent on the written examination through Public Safety Testing and pass the physical examination. Candidates must also complete or have completed the Washington State Criminal Justice Training Commission Basic Law Enforcement Academy within one year of hire. Background investigations, polygraph tests, and psychological evaluations are mandatory.

Certification Maintenance: Each Deputy Sheriff is responsible for maintaining their peace officer certification status, which is a requirement for continued employment with the sheriff's office.
