The Intellectual Property Counsel plays a vital role in developing and overseeing the organization's patent and trademark assets.

This position requires a strong foundation in electrical engineering principles combined with expertise in the patent and trademark landscape to create high-quality patent submissions and trademarks, as well as to provide strategic business insights. A solid background in electrical engineering and familiarity with the patent and trademark procedures is essential. Knowledge of analog circuitry and switched-mode power supply technologies is advantageous. Exceptional writing and editing abilities in English are critical.

The responsibilities of the Intellectual Property Counsel include:

  1. preparing and managing domestic patent applications directly with the USPTO or collaborating with external legal counsel
  2. handling international patent applications in partnership with outside legal advisors
  3. crafting claims for both offensive and defensive patent strategies
  4. identifying technologies suitable for patent protection through collaboration with integrated circuit designers and applications engineers
  5. coordinating with paralegals and administrative personnel to submit patent and trademark applications and necessary documentation to the USPTO
  6. evaluating the patent and trademark portfolio to analyze costs and benefits, presenting findings to executive leadership
  7. conducting trademark clearance searches and assessments in both domestic and international databases
  8. preparing, filing, and managing U.S. trademark applications and overseeing renewals with the USPTO
  9. organizing and managing foreign trademark applications and maintaining registrations with legal counsel
  10. leading brand protection initiatives and working with internal teams to ensure compliance with brand standards and trademark usage
  11. drafting and reviewing demand letters, cease and desist notices, and amicable agreements

QUALIFICATIONS/EXPERIENCE:

  1. J.D. from an accredited law institution and admission to the California state bar.
  2. Registered with the United States Patent and Trademark Office.
  3. B.S., M.S., or Ph.D. in electrical engineering or a related technical discipline, demonstrating proficiency in the theory and application of analog electronic circuits.
  4. A minimum of 5 years of experience in patent and trademark prosecution.
  5. Highly developed technical writing and editing capabilities, showcasing a superior command of the English language.
  6. Experience in drafting patent applications is preferred. Additional relevant experience includes writing and editing for technical publications.
  7. Proficient in utilizing software tools such as Visio, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint for document preparation that includes drawings, images, and text.
  8. Experience with Patent Center and electronic docketing systems, such as Foundation IP, is a valuable asset.
  9. Experience in constructing and evaluating circuits in a laboratory setting is desirable.
  10. Familiarity with the design of offline switched-mode power supplies or knowledge of high voltage semiconductor device fabrication would be a bonus.

Power Integrations is dedicated to fostering teams that drive innovation and considers various factors when determining compensation. The annual base salary range for this role is $133,472 - $200,456. Our salary ranges are established based on role, level, qualifications, and work location.

The displayed range reflects the minimum and maximum target for new hire salaries for this position in California. Within this range, individual compensation is influenced by additional factors, including job-related skills, experience, and relevant education or training.
