Position Overview


The Division of Mental Health is seeking to hire a Physician Specialist Option D to serve as an Illinois Licensed Physician, providing a comprehensive range of psychiatric and medical evaluations and treatments to patients.

This role involves conducting examinations, diagnosing, and treating patients during assigned shifts. The specialist will collaborate as a member of the treatment team, respond to emergency calls, and ensure that the medical and psychiatric services provided meet state and professional standards. The specialist will also prepare for and attend court testimony as required.

Job Responsibilities

As a non-administrative Illinois licensed Physician, the specialist will provide a comprehensive range of psychiatric and medical evaluations and treatments to patients.

Regularly evaluate patients' general and psychiatric progress and document findings in the medical record, issuing physician's orders as necessary.

Act as a member and leader of the treatment team, coordinating the development of patient treatment plans, including the review and evaluation of treatment, discharge planning, and milieu recommendations.

Maintain membership with the Chicago-Read Mental Health Center Medical Staff.
Offer psychiatric guidance to non-psychiatric physicians, other clinicians, and nursing staff.
Perform additional duties as required or assigned that fall within the scope of the responsibilities outlined above.

Minimum Qualifications

Requires a valid State of Illinois Physician and Surgeon License.
Requires American Board Certification in the job-related medical specialty of psychiatry.

Preferred Qualifications


Two (2) years of professional experience evaluating the quality of specialized medical care and treatment for patients with mental illness.

Two (2) years of professional experience coordinating medical services with other professional disciplines and supportive personnel.
Two (2) years of professional experience conducting psychiatric evaluations of patients.

Two (2) years of professional experience identifying the most appropriate positive treatment regimen and implementing that treatment in accordance with best practices.

Two (2) years of professional experience communicating effectively both orally and in writing.
Two (2) years of professional experience preparing comprehensive and specialized medical records and reports.

Conditions of Employment

Requires possession of a valid Illinois Controlled Substance License.
Requires possession of a valid United States Drug Enforcement Administration Certificate of Registration.

Requires the ability to meet the requirements of and be appointed to the medical staff association of Chicago-Read Mental Health Center within 30 days of employment.

Requires the ability to work after business hours, weekends, and holidays.
Requires ability to pass the IDHS background check.
Requires ability to pass a drug screen for drugs prohibited from recreational use under Illinois Law.
