Operating Room Surgical Specialist

Position Overview:
As an Operating Room Surgical Specialist, you will play a crucial role in supporting the surgical team in delivering exceptional patient care under the guidance of a Registered Nurse.
Department Details:
- **Department:** Surgery
- **Schedule:** 36 hours per week, with on-call duties and rotating weekends and holidays.
- **Hospital:** Ascension Borgess Hospital
- **Location:** Kalamazoo, MI

Key Responsibilities:
- Assist the surgical team in providing comprehensive patient care.
- Exhibit advanced knowledge of surgical procedures and technical requirements.
- Serve as a resource for instrumentation requirements and troubleshooting.
- Demonstrate proficiency in scrubbing for multiple specialties.
- Actively participate in training new staff and providing performance feedback.
- Maintain effective communication skills within the surgical team.
- Ensure adherence to aseptic techniques and standards.
- Organize operating room equipment and supplies according to surgical preferences.
- Conduct accurate counts of sponges, needles, and instruments.
- Prepare and maintain tissue and lab specimens for pathology.
- Utilize computer systems for preference cards and supply management.
- Stay informed about all specialty areas and the role of the Surgical Technologist.
Qualifications:
- **Licensure/Certification:**
- BLS Provider credential from the American Heart Association (AHA) required within 30 days of hire.
- Certified Surgical Technologist credential from the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBSTSA) preferred prior to hire.
- **Education:**
- High school diploma or GED required.
- Completion of an accredited Surgical Technologist program preferred.
- **Experience:**
- Minimum of two years of current surgical technologist experience required.
- Candidates with less experience may be considered if they have completed an approved Surgical Technologist program.
- Five years of relevant experience preferred.
