Join the Army National Guard and become a skilled Plumber Specialist. As a member of this elite team, you'll have the opportunity to develop your skills in pipe systems, hydraulic and pneumatic systems, and plumbing fixtures. Your duties will include reading drawings, plans, and specifications, planning the layout of pipe systems, and installing and maintaining pipe systems and plumbing fixtures. You'll work with pipe made of various materials and different pipe connection methods. Some of the skills you'll learn include installation and repair of plumbing fixtures, boiler controls, water purification, and distillation systems. You'll also develop an interest in math and shop mechanics, and a preference for physical work. With additional certifications, you could work for public utility companies, plumbing contractors, or as a self-employed contractor. The Army National Guard offers paid training, a monthly paycheck, Montgomery GI Bill, federal and state tuition assistance, retirement benefits for part-time service, low-cost life insurance, 401(k)-type savings plan, student loan repayment program, health care benefits, VA home loans, and bonuses. Requirements include military enlistment in the Army National Guard, being at least a junior in high school, or having a high school diploma or a GED certificate, being between the ages of 17 and 35, passing a physical exam, meeting legal and moral standards, and meeting citizenship requirements.
