**Job Summary**

The Phlebotomy Specialist performs venipuncture techniques to obtain quality blood samples from patients and prepares those specimens for medical testing. This role requires direct contact with patients, creating an atmosphere of trust and confidence while explaining procedures and drawing blood specimens in a skillful, safe, and accurate manner.

**Key Responsibilities**

  • Greet and welcome patients, verifying patient identification and test orders before performing phlebotomy procedures.
  • Collect and prepare samples for analysis accurately and skillfully, evaluating suitability of specimens and following laboratory policy.
  • Perform venipuncture or capillary collection of blood specimens using proper techniques, labeling tubes in the patient's presence.
  • Assist in the processing of specimens, distributing paperwork and specimens to appropriate departments or reference labs.
  • Use the lab computer system for order entry, patient inquiries, and adding tests on previously collected samples.
  • Restock and track inventory in the phlebotomy room and mobile blood drawing trays.
  • Collect samples for pre-employment, DOT, and random urine samples for drug testing, maintaining chain of custody as required.
  • Collect non-DOT and DOT breath alcohol samples testing, maintaining chain of custody as required.
  • Collect Covid-19 specimens in-house and at designated collection areas.
  • Assist nursing staff with collections of ER, swing bed, and inpatients when necessary.

**Requirements**

  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Completion of an approved Phlebotomy Technician Program or three months of on-the-job phlebotomy training or experience in a clinical setting.
  • Preferred: 1 year of phlebotomy-related experience, successful completion of a nationally accredited phlebotomy or medical assistant training program, or knowledge of specimen handling and collection requirements.
