In the Navy, maintaining optimal vision is crucial for operational effectiveness. As an Optometrist, you will play a vital role in ensuring that Sailors and their families have access to top-tier eye care services.
Key Responsibilities:
As a commissioned officer in the Navy Medical Service Corps, your primary responsibilities will include:
- Conducting comprehensive eye examinations and refractive services, including the prescription of corrective lenses.
- Managing ocular health issues and providing treatment for various ocular pathologies.
- Collaborating in surgical procedures and co-managing patient care.
- Specializing in areas such as low vision rehabilitation and traumatic brain injury recovery.
Work Environment:
Navy Optometrists are stationed at various medical facilities worldwide, offering a unique opportunity to serve in diverse settings, including hospitals and aboard hospital ships.
Training and Development:
Upon completion of medical school, you will attend Officer Development School (ODS) to gain essential military training and leadership skills. This program is designed to prepare you for your role as a Navy officer.
Career Advancement:
Opportunities for promotion are available based on performance, and specialized training can lead to further career development in related fields.
Qualifications:
To qualify for this position, candidates must meet the following criteria:
- U.S. Citizenship and age between 21 and 41.
- Current licensure to practice optometry in the U.S.

- Ability to pass a comprehensive medical examination.
