The Security Officer is a non-sworn position within the Department of Public Safety at Samford University. The successful candidate will assist with routine and emergency calls for service, provide support to sworn officers, and perform various duties to ensure the safety and security of the university community.

Key Responsibilities

  • Patrol the campus in vehicles, golf carts, and on foot to maintain a visible presence and respond to incidents.
  • Assist with traffic direction and parking lot assignments to ensure a safe and efficient flow of traffic.
  • Multi-task simultaneously to include communicating with dispatchers, responding to emergency calls, and providing assistance to the public.
  • Complete daily logs of calls received and dispatches appropriate personnel to requested locations.
  • Monitor the university's fire alarm system and respond to emergencies as needed.
  • Manage email communications and maintain confidentiality in all matters related to police work.
  • Participate in training and professional development to maintain certification and stay up-to-date on law enforcement-related data systems.
  • Communicate effectively with the public, university officials, and law enforcement agencies to promote a safe and secure environment.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the supervisor or Chief of Public Safety.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Must be 21 years of age or older.
  • Possess a valid Alabama driver's license and have a satisfactory driving record.
  • Proficient communication skills, both oral and written.
  • Possess the ability to speak articulately and read and comprehend correspondence, manuals, and policies.
  • Must have no felony convictions or convictions for crimes of moral turpitude.
  • Ability to work independently and maintain confidentiality as needed.
  • Position involves extensive sitting, standing, stooping, and walking.
