The State of South Carolina is seeking a skilled Highway Maintenance Worker to join our team. As a Highway Maintenance Worker, you will be responsible for performing a variety of tasks related to the maintenance and repair of state highways and bridges.
Key Responsibilities- Operate large motor graders to clean out sideline ditches during maintenance operations.
- Operate heavy equipment such as front-end loaders to load and unload materials used in the maintenance of highways and bridges.
- Operate backhoes during shoulder operations.
- Operate medium equipment such as tandem dump trucks in the hauling of various materials such as pipe, asphalt, dirt, sand, and coquina used in the maintenance of state highways and right-of-ways.
- Operate small equipment such as tractors with brooms during shoulder operations and reclamation work.
- Perform necessary hand labor when needed to install pipe, spread asphalt, sand clay, or other materials needed in the maintenance of state roads.
- Assist with emergency and inclement weather operations, which may include extended hours and/or 12-hour shifts.
- One (1) year of related work experience, or an approved acceptable equivalence in accordance with State Human Resources Regulations.
- A valid motor vehicle operator's license is required.
- Requires attainment of a Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) within six (6) months of placement in the position.
The physical demands for the essential functions involve bending, stooping, reaching, twisting, climbing, balancing, kneeling, pushing, pulling, and grasping. Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds. Walking for extended periods, treading rough terrain, working in close proximity to motoring traffic, and in natural environmental hazards. May be required to work hours outside the normal scheduled work week, especially during inclement weather and/or other departmental-related emergencies.
