Job Description and Duties


As a Caltrans Highway Maintenance Leadworker, you will be working under the supervision of a Caltrans Maintenance Supervisor, operating light vehicles and equipment requiring a Class B, California Commercial Driver's License with a tank endorsement and Category 2 equipment used by the assigned unit. You will also conduct some training in the field and be responsible for completing daily and weekly timekeeping and ordering supplies as needed. Additionally, you will assist in work related to the maintenance of stencils (inspection, layout) at all locations on State highways.


Responsibilities



  • Operate light vehicles and equipment requiring a Class B, California Commercial Driver's License with a tank endorsement and Category 2 equipment used by the assigned unit.
  • Conduct some training in the field.
  • Complete daily and weekly timekeeping and ordering supplies as needed.
  • Assist in work related to the maintenance of stencils (inspection, layout) at all locations on State highways.

Requirements



  • A valid unrestricted Class B commercial driver's license, with Tank Vehicle (N) endorsement.
  • Pass a drug screening.
  • Knowledge of environmental, storm water, emergencies, natural disasters, accident prevention techniques, principals of effective supervision and safe work practices.

Working Conditions


Work in a wide range of sometimes extreme conditions, including heat up to 120 degrees, cold to 32 degrees, strong winds, rain, sleet, and snow. May be scheduled to work the night shift as needed to meet operational needs with proper advance notice as per the Bargaining Unit 12, Memorandum of Understanding.


Personal Safety Requirements



  • Appropriate footwear, in good and sturdy condition, must be worn.
  • Either long or short-sleeved shirts provided by Caltrans, or a safety vest is to be worn over non-safety shirts or coats.
  • Long pants. No shorts or cutoffs.
  • Provided safety gear; hard hats, safety glasses, hearing protection devices, face shields, gloves, respirators, chaps, or other safety gear must be worn when required by the department.
