Nurse Residency Specialist Job Summary

The Nurse Residency Specialist is a key role in creating a supportive learning environment for new graduate nurses to grow professionally and efficiently progress through novice to proficient RN competency.

This position serves as a coach and mentor to assigned nurse residents and international nurses, implementing system-level guidelines and programming to socialize and enculturate them into SSM Health and promote participant retention.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Develop and deliver nursing residency classes and experiences at the system and ministry levels.
  • Participate in nurse residency program development and enhancement as an expert clinician.
  • Utilize integrative learning approaches to assist with clinical reasoning and skill development of nurse residents, including case studies and simulation.
  • Collaborate with preceptors and nurse leaders to ensure progressive assessment and monitoring of nurse residents and international nurses.
  • Provide coaching and mentorship to preceptors and assigned nurse residents, promoting a culture of mutual respect and trust.
  • Work closely with preceptors to ensure smooth transition from student to professional practice role, educating them to assess, validate, and remediate competency of learners.
  • Collaborate with department leaders in selection and ongoing evaluation of preceptors.
  • Work a schedule conducive to nurse resident schedules, including afternoons, evenings, nights, and weekends.
Requirements:
  • Bachelor's degree in nursing.
  • Three years' registered nurse experience.
Physical Requirements:
  • Constant standing and walking.
  • Frequent lifting/carrying and pushing/pulling objects weighing 0-25 lbs.
  • Frequent reaching, gripping, and keyboard use/data entry.
  • Frequent use of vision and depth perception for distances near (20 inches or less) and far (20 feet or more) and to identify and distinguish colors.
  • Frequent use of hearing and speech to share or receive information through oral communication.
  • Occasional use of smell to detect/recognize odors.
  • Occasional use of vision to judge distances and spatial relationships.
  • Occasional bending, stooping, kneeling, squatting, twisting, and gripping and repetitive foot/leg and hand/arm movements.
  • Occasional lifting/carrying and pushing/pulling objects weighing 25-50 lbs.
  • Occasional lifting/moving of patients.
