Phlebotomy Specialist

Collects and prepares blood specimens for laboratory testing, representing the laboratory to patients and their families. Reviews physician orders, obtains clinical and demographic information, prints draw lists, and verifies patient identification and correct specimen type for tests requested.

• Phlebotomy technique, competence in venipuncture, micro collection, bleeding times, blood cultures, therapeutic phlebotomy, Blood Bank specimens.
• Ensures positive patient identification and prioritizes phlebotomy duties to achieve efficiency.
• Readily responds to changes in work schedules and volumes, and continually uses time to departmental advantage when work schedules are light.
• Answers the telephone to schedule tests, relays accurate information, and responds to stat draw requests from all patient care areas in a STAT manner.
• Efficiently directs calls to appropriate areas or persons, obtains and enters information into the L.I.S. and the H.I.S., registers patients into HIS, and updates all information, demographics, and insurance.
• Maintains equipment and inventory of needed supplies, keeps the patient drawing area clean and tidy, and maintains phlebotomy basket/cart, ensuring safety measures are followed.
• Recognizes the Phlebotomist-Registrar's role as it relates to the overall function of the laboratory, patient care, customer service, and the business of healthcare.
• Conscious of biohazard safety as it relates to the job, uses the pneumatic tube system, manual delivery of specimens to main lab, disposal of blood collection equipment, and changing of gloves between patients.
• Bedside manner and attitude toward the patient, performs medical necessity checks prior to out-patient phlebotomy, and ensures specimens are packaged properly and delivered to Specimen Processing in a timely manner.
• Serves as a resource and teaches new employees.

• Able to communicate effectively, pleasantly, cooperatively, and discreetly with patients, physicians, hospital employees, and the public.
• Able to work under pressure.
• Willingness to increase knowledge of laboratory/hospital functions.
• Demonstrates creativity and initiative in problem-solving.
• Phlebotomy certification within 1 year.

• Essential:
  • Knowledge of Office Equipment.
  • Clear Communication Skills Both Written and Verbal.
  • Knowledge of Basic Computer Programs.
  • Able to Keep Confidential Information Regarding Patients, Team Members.
  • Able to Withstand Crisis Situations.
  • Has Skills to Provide Customer Service to Patients, Team Members, and Visitors.
  • Experience With or Completed Course in Medical Terminology.
  • Completed a Course in Phlebotomy.

• Essential:
  • BLS - Basic Life Saving certification.

• Essential:
  • High school graduate or equivalent.
