Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled and detail-oriented Animal Care Specialist to join our team at the University of Pittsburgh. As an Animal Care Specialist, you will be responsible for providing exceptional care to laboratory animals, ensuring their health and well-being, and maintaining a safe and clean environment.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provide food, water, and enrichment to laboratory animals
  • Perform cage cleaning and sanitization procedures in accordance with standard operating procedures
  • Conduct daily health observations and administer basic medical treatments
  • Maintain accurate and detailed records of animal care activities and environmental parameters
  • Assist with facility support tasks, including laundry, cleaning, and stocking supply areas
Requirements
  • High school diploma or equivalent required
  • No prior experience necessary, but a combination of education and relevant experience will be considered
  • Ability to stand for extended periods, lift up to 50 pounds, and navigate around animal facility caging and equipment
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to document information in English
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
Working Conditions
  • Monday - Friday, 7:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m., with some holidays and weekends
  • Work in a fast-paced animal care environment, with frequent exposure to animals and animal waste
  • Wear Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) as required by the job duties
