About this Role

Job Summary:

The Underground Utility Locator role involves collaborating with a drilling operator to install conduits and cables beneath the surface using advanced horizontal directional drilling technology and locating tools. The Locator will also assist in the installation of handholes, flowerpots, pedestals, and signage as necessary. This position entails fieldwork, which may require overtime, weekend, and holiday shifts, as well as working in various weather conditions.

What You'll Do

Responsibilities:
  • Accurately locate the drill head during operational activities
  • Conduct potholing as required
  • Operate various excavation machinery and support the driller in equipment operation
  • Install handholes, flowerpots, and other outside plant devices
  • Complete progress forms, project activity reports, and other documentation related to work assignments
  • Work safely in streets, alleys, and other challenging environments, including manholes and ditches
  • Utilize crew vehicles, drilling machinery, vactron equipment, and other tools typically used in horizontal directional drilling
  • Ensure proper safety protocols are followed and train new employees on equipment usage and installation processes
  • Adhere to OSHA, NESC, and company safety regulations while performing assigned tasks
What You'll Bring

Qualifications:
  • High school diploma or equivalent is required; HDD training is a plus
  • A minimum of 3 years of experience as a horizontal directional drilling locator
  • Possession of a CDL or the ability to obtain one is preferred
  • A strong safety record
  • Ability to read and interpret outside plant maps and designs
  • Familiarity with NESC, OSHA, and relevant local codes
  • Proficiency in using a laptop or tablet for communication and reporting
  • Strong organizational, planning, and follow-up skills
  • Excellent analytical and communication abilities, with sound judgment for effective collaboration
  • Capability to identify priority issues and escalate them appropriately
  • Willingness to learn new processes and adapt to changing requirements
