Fleet Mechanic Job Description

The City of Houston, TX is seeking a skilled Fleet Mechanic to join our team. As a Fleet Mechanic, you will be responsible for performing preventative maintenance, diagnostics, and repairs of limited complexity to City vehicles and equipment.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Perform preventive maintenance activities to vehicles and equipment, including oil and filter changes, servicing of lubricant and fluid levels, component wear inspection, and systems checks.
  • Respond to limited complexity reports of operational/condition issues with vehicles and equipment, performing systems testing and diagnostics to determine cause and course of repair action.
  • Replace failed vehicle and equipment components of limited complexity and rebuild vehicle and equipment components as needed.
  • Perform vehicle body and paint repairs of limited complexity, as well as component upfit and make ready.
  • Service vehicles and equipment as needed at garages and at off-site locations, ordering parts and updating/completing work orders according to standard operating procedures.
  • Use tools and equipment such as electronic and mechanical diagnostic equipment, tire changers, bench grinders, pressure washers, hoists, jacks, and a variety of hand and power tools.
  • Maintain a clean and safe work environment, performing housekeeping duties and observing environmental and hazardous material procedures.
Requirements:
  • High school degree, GED or equivalent.
  • One-year experience of automotive, diesel and/or heavy-equipment maintenance/repair experience.
  • Valid Texas Class C license upon hire.
  • Class A or B Commercial Driver's License (CDL) within 6-months of employment.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Heavy-duty diesel and welding experience.
  • Mechanical aptitude.
