About the Role

The City of Tomball is seeking a skilled Utilities Serviceperson to perform a variety of tasks in facility operations, construction, and maintenance. This entry-level position involves physical labor in assignments such as construction, maintenance, and landscaping.

Work is closely supervised and performed according to established procedures or specific oral or written instruction. Maintenance workers can be assigned to any field maintenance division or Utility Billing Department.

Responsibilities:
  • Operate excavation equipment such as backhoes, loaders, and other specialized machinery.
  • Maintain Class D water and wastewater licenses within one year from hire.
  • Possess a valid Class C Texas motor vehicle operator's license.
  • Have a high school diploma or GED.
  • Pass pre-employment drug screening and random drug screening in the DOT covered position pool.
Key Duties:
  • Foster a safe working environment by following safety protocols and observing safety rules and precautions.
  • Install, repair, and maintain water, gas, and sewer systems, including meters, manholes, lines, valves, regulators, lift stations, pumps, storage tanks, and plant components.
  • Conduct sewer line function and capacity tests through smoke testing, dye monitoring, and sewer cleaning operations.
  • Read water meters accurately.
  • Direct traffic flow by setting up and taking down traffic cones and barricades for special events.
  • Respond promptly to emergency repair requests and work orders.
  • Read maps, blueprints, diagrams, and grade stakes for accurate location identification.
  • Repair or report vandalism, damage, or major maintenance requirements immediately.
  • Loading, unloading, and transporting materials, equipment, dirt, and construction materials safely.
  • Clean, wash, lubricate, fuel, maintain, and stock City service vehicles regularly.
  • Perform installations, repairs, and replacements of underground water, wastewater mains, and gas lines using basic plumbing tools.
  • Making excavations in concrete, pavement, and dirt to repair water, sewer, and gas lines using a spade, pick, digging bar, broom, pneumatic and hydraulic tools.
  • Clean and vacuum sewer lines using flusher trucks, rodder trucks, hand rods, and high-pressure water hoses effectively.
  • Backfill open trenches, tamp holes, and repair curbs, streets, and sidewalks after completion.
  • Dig and shore trenches using shoring jacks, timbers, ladders, and plywood securely.
  • Test air quality in vaults and confined workspaces using gas detectors.
  • Clean ditches, dig trenches, and post holes efficiently.
  • Install, clean, test, repair, and replace water meters and meter boxes precisely.
  • Maintain pumping stations and perform preventive maintenance on alarm systems, motors, pumps, gauges, air compressors, chlorine application devices, and hydraulic valves regularly.
  • Inspect systems for leaks, construction flaws, or root invasions frequently.
  • Remove manhole frames and covers using jackhammers and enter manholes safely.
  • Assist with concrete and asphalt patching repairs or replacements.
  • Perform minor building maintenance, cleaning, and custodial duties as needed.
  • Turn, install, check, tighten, repair, and replace water valves using wrenches and valve keys.
  • Check and maintain camera and low monitoring equipment.
  • Use video cameras to film pipeline flow inspections.
  • Assist in building and painting various City facilities and structures using hammers, nails, drills, saws, levels, measuring tapes, brushes, and rollers.
  • Check, repair, and install fire hydrants using a flow meter, spanner, valve key, and hydrant wrench.
  • Measure and map out valve locations accurately.
  • Document daily work logs.
  • Work independently in performing regular job duties.
  • Provide routine factual information or respond to routine inquiries from the public and warn them of hazards.
  • Respond to after-hours call-outs promptly.

Salary: $36,109 - $54,184 per year ($17.36 hourly to $26.07 hourly)
