Job Description and Duties

The Research Data Specialist will be directed by the Standards Compliance Director in the Standards Compliance Department at the Department of State Hospitals – Atascadero (ASH). The incumbent will be responsible for the following duties but not limited to:

  • Identify scope, hypothesize, plan, organize, and conduct complicated studies.
  • Design, create, summarize, and interpret outcome and program evaluation.
  • Apply advanced principles of research design toward development of prototypical data models.
  • Knowledge of advanced statistical procedures.
  • Communicate effectively and produce executive summaries and reports.
  • Use established methods to validate and test evidence produced to confirm or reject hypotheses.
  • Properly acquire and integrate local data stores.
  • Provide consultation to staff on the application of appropriate statistical procedures.

  • BE LIST ELIGIBLE: Successfully complete the competitive State civil service exam pertaining to this classification at, OR
  • BE TRANSFER ELIGIBLE: Have current employment with the State of California in the same classification or in a classification that is comparable (employees who wish to be considered based on transfer eligibility must meet the minimum qualifications of the classification per DPA Rule 250), OR
  • BE REINSTATEMENT ELIGIBLE: Have obtained previous permanent employment with the State of California in the same classification or in a classification that is comparable.

Minimum Qualifications

Incumbents must possess 12 semester or 18 quarter units course work in any combination of a data driven research-related field, such as economics, mathematics, psychology, sociology, demography, geography, anthropology, statistics, data science or a research-related field. This must include at least one course in statistical methods; AND

Equivalent to graduation from an accredited college with a bachelor's degree. Work experience may be substituted on a year-for-year basis by applicants who have the required units mentioned above.

A Master's Degree in economics, mathematics, psychology, sociology, demography, geography, anthropology, statistics, data science or a related research-oriented field may be substituted for two years of the required experience. A doctoral degree in the same areas may be substituted for three years of the required experience.

Experience applicable to one of the following patterns may be combined on a proportional basis with experience applicable to the other pattern to meet the total experience requirements.

EITHER I- One year in the California state civil service performing data research-oriented duties at a level of responsibility equivalent to a Research Analyst II; OR

II-Four years of progressively responsible technical research experience engaged in the collection, compilation, analysis, and interpretation of data. (Experience applied toward this requirement must include one year of experience performing duties with a level of responsibility equivalent to a Research Analyst II.)

Working Conditions

This position may be eligible for a hybrid work schedule. The amount of telework is at the discretion of the Department and/or supervisor and is subject to change as business needs arise.

This position may require occasional work in the Secure Treatment Area (STA).
