Department Overview
The Aviation and Technology Department at San Jose State University provides a Bachelor of Science in Aviation (BS Aviation) and a Master of Science in Quality Assurance (MSQA) for students seeking advanced education. The Aviation Program encompasses four distinct pathways: Professional Flight (Pilots), Aviation Management (Management), Flight Operations (Operations), and Maintenance Management (Maintenance). Currently, the department serves an enrollment of 270 students. Our Flight Simulation Lab features over 10 advanced simulators and has access to a spacious hangar, classrooms, laboratories, and offices at the County's Reid-Hillview Airport. Students in both the Aviation and Technology Programs are encouraged to engage in internships and can earn academic credits (Avia 195 and Tech 195). Undergraduate students are also motivated to undertake individual research projects in collaboration with faculty, fostering their interest in graduate studies (Avia 180 and Tech 180). The department relies on its students to lead laboratory sessions and assist faculty in developing and grading laboratory materials.
Key Responsibilities
- Recognize and address the diverse needs of a varied student population, including differences in age, abilities, cultural backgrounds, and academic preparation, through inclusive teaching materials and strategies.
- All courses must be organized within the Canvas Learning Management System (LMS).
- Courses are to be offered and conducted as scheduled throughout the semester, adhering to the assigned mode (asynchronous, synchronous, bichronous, in-person, or hybrid).
- Instructors are expected to collaborate with the Department Chair and Course Coordinators to develop course materials, deliver effective instruction, maintain office hours in line with University Policy, and participate in the peer-review process. Instructors are encouraged to seek guidance from the Department Chair regarding University policies and departmental practices related to grading, testing, textbooks, office hours, curriculum goals, disability accommodations, and academic integrity.
Qualifications Required
- Applicants should demonstrate awareness and sensitivity to the educational objectives of a multicultural student body, as evidenced by cross-cultural study, training, teaching, or similar experiences.
- A PhD or MS degree in the relevant field or related areas is required for teaching positions. In exceptional cases, a BS degree combined with significant industry experience may be acceptable.
- Proficiency in the subject matter of the assigned discipline is essential.
- Evidence of satisfactory academic performance in previous educational endeavors is required.
Compensation Details
Salary and compensation will be determined based on qualifications and experience. For more information regarding salary range placement, please refer to University Policy S21-2.
Anticipated starting salary ranges are as follows:
L-A / Range 2 - $5007 - $5675
L-B / Range 3 - $5925 - $7125
L-C / Range 4 - $6500 - $8982
L-D / Range 5 - $8184 - $9854
These salary ranges represent the anticipated monthly salary for full-time academic year faculty, with part-time rates prorated accordingly. Faculty receive six monthly payments per semester (full-time annual salary = monthly rate x 12). For further details, please consult the Faculty Salary Schedule.

Employment Conditions
Faculty members are required to complete assigned CSU employee training based on their role, including training on discrimination prevention, gender equity, and health and safety. In accordance with the Jeanne Clery Disclosure of Campus Security Policy and Campus Crime Statistics Act, faculty in this role will undergo ongoing review for designation as a Campus Security Authority (CSA). Individuals designated as CSAs must report Clery incidents immediately and complete necessary training as directed by the University Clery Director. Compliance with safety measures to mitigate COVID-19 transmission may also be required.
Conditional Offer
Employment for this faculty position is contingent upon proof of eligibility to work in the United States. Offers may be rescinded if background checks reveal disqualifying information or if the candidate is found to have withheld or falsified information. Failure to satisfactorily complete the background check may impact the continued employment of current CSU employees who were conditionally offered the position.
Appointment is subject to budget and enrollment considerations and follows the order of assignment provisions in the collective bargaining agreement between California State University and the California Faculty Association.
