OverviewThe Chaplain Resident position is a unique opportunity for individuals to develop their skills in spiritual care and counseling under the guidance of experienced clinical supervisors. This educational position is designed to prepare residents for board-certification as professional chaplains.
Responsibilities- Participate in a clinical rotation that provides 24/7 spiritual care coverage within the hospital, working all shifts.
- Assess the spiritual needs and resources of patients, their families, and staff in their care.
- Design and implement spiritual care interventions for patients, their families, and staff based on assessment and with cultural sensitivity.
- Document assessment, interventions, and outcomes in the patient record.
- Participate actively as a member of the interdisciplinary team.
- Coordinate spiritual care for patients and their families in collaboration with staff chaplains and clergy and spiritual leaders in the community.
- Utilize the clinical method of learning through reflective reporting of clinical work and through self-evaluation.
- Utilize a range of skills in their clinical work, including listening/attending, empathic reflection, conflict resolution/confrontation, crisis management, and appropriate use of spiritual/religious resources.
- Respond to ethical dilemmas of persons in their care or of staff as requested and/or as appropriate.
- Make referrals to members of the interdisciplinary team and/or to spiritual care providers in the community based on assessment and as appropriate.
- Participate actively in all aspects of the educational program, including but not limited to group and individual supervision, assigned readings, reflective writing, and interdisciplinary learning activities.
- Participate in the clinical orientation of chaplain interns.
- Submit regularly reports of their clinical work as required by the residency curriculum and departmental policies.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
- Education & Training: Master of Divinity or equivalent degree and one successfully completed previous unit of CPE.
- Experience: Pastoral experience in a healthcare setting preferred.
- License & Certification: None.
