Position Overview:


The registered nurse will apply the nursing process to deliver comprehensive pre and post procedural care to patients within Ambulatory Care Services (ACS) and the Post Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU).

The nurse will collaborate with other healthcare professionals during the perioperative phase and provide guidance to nursing assistive personnel. Responsibilities include delegating nursing care in accordance with legal and regulatory standards as well as organizational policies. The nurse will exercise sound judgment in executing prescribed medical orders from practitioners and will serve as the primary caregiver for patients. Additionally, the nurse will act as a resource and preceptor, taking charge of duties as assigned.

Key Responsibilities:
Utilizes the nursing process to ensure safe patient care in alignment with AORN and ASPAN standards throughout the surgical care continuum.

Assessment:
Engages in a systematic and ongoing process of data collection, recognizing significant information and prioritizing its relevance to operative or invasive procedures.

Diagnosis:
Identifies nursing diagnoses that correspond with the assessment findings.

Outcome Identification:
Establishes expected outcomes tailored to the patient, setting priorities and timelines. Communicates these outcomes to healthcare providers to ensure continuity of care.

Planning:
Creates an individualized care plan aimed at achieving desired outcomes, sharing this plan with the patient and/or support person, as well as healthcare providers.


Acquires and demonstrates the skills necessary to provide age-appropriate care to patients and families through ongoing education and training.

Utilizes knowledge of procedures to prepare for the necessary equipment and supplies.

Implementation:
Executes nursing interventions in line with the care plan, collaborating with the patient and adapting to new information as necessary. Documents interventions to ensure continuity of care.

Coordination of Care:
Continuously coordinates patient care throughout the perioperative experience, delegating tasks based on scope and competency while organizing nursing activities efficiently.

Consultation:
Engages in specialized discussions pertinent to the patient, facilitating communication among healthcare professionals to enhance patient outcomes.

Evaluation:
Assesses patient progress towards achieving outcomes, conducting systematic evaluations to measure the effectiveness of interventions. Monitors patient progress in person or via telephone triage, documenting and sharing updates as appropriate.

Safety:


Recognizes emergency situations and implements appropriate measures according to unit policies and procedures, adhering to ACLS/PALS AHA guidelines.

Medication Safety:
Exhibits awareness of proper medication use and complies with all policies regarding medication administration. Demonstrates proficiency in caring for patients undergoing conscious sedation and performs thorough assessments of patient responses to medications.

Safe Environment:


The perioperative nurse will adhere to safe patient handling and movement protocols, ensuring correct body alignment during patient positioning and transfers. Follows fire prevention and management plans as per established policies.

Demonstrates proper use of equipment and supplies utilized in the perioperative setting.

Safe Culture:
Actively engages in communication practices that promote safe care, including but not limited to SBAR, pre-operative briefings, and time-outs. Adheres to specimen handling and documentation protocols.

Infection Control:


Complies with all infection control policies and procedures, including standard precautions, hand hygiene, aseptic techniques, and appropriate use of personal protective equipment.

Accepts assigned responsibilities, including charge duties.

Room Turnover Initiatives:

Involves light housekeeping tasks, equipment procurement, restocking supplies, and participates in the economical use of resources, including instrument cleaning, reprocessing, and storage.

Performs additional duties as assigned within the scope of practice, which may include assignments to different cost centers or work locations as needed to meet patient care demands.


Incorporates the Maui Health Nursing Vision, Model, and Values into daily nursing practice.

Graduate from an accredited nursing program.

License, Certification, Registration:
Basic Life Support or CPR/AED for Professional Rescuers
Registered Nurse License (Hawaii) required at hire
Pediatric Advanced Life Support
Advanced Cardiac Life Support

Additional Requirements:


Demonstrated knowledge and skills in adaptability, change management, decision-making, attention to detail, customer service, interpersonal relations, oral communication, prioritization, problem-solving, quality management, results orientation, systems thinking, teamwork, time management, and written communication.


Specialty areas include Procedural Sedation, Operating Room, Emergency Department, Telemetry, Intensive Care Units, Pediatrics, Post Anesthesia Care Unit, Cardiology, Ambulatory Treatment, and Diagnostic Imaging.


Preferred Qualifications:
Minimum one (1) year of experience in a specialty area or completion of a formal course in the specialty.

Preferred Certification:
Certified Perianesthesia Nurse (CPAN)
