Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Interventional Radiologic Technologist to join our team at Brown University Health. The successful candidate will be responsible for performing a variety of duties in support of the Vascular Interventional Radiology Department, including diagnostic and interventional procedures under the guidance of an interventional radiologist and/or Physician Assistant (PA).

Key Responsibilities
  • Comply with hospital and departmental policies and procedures, including protecting the confidentiality of patient information.
  • Perform arteriogram, digital subtraction angioplasty (DSA), abscess drainage, transhepatic cholangiogram, biliary tube insertion/exchange, nephrostomy, percutaneous cholangiogram, central venous access catheter (CVC) insertion/exchange, lysis, percutaneous transluminal angioplasty (PTA), stenting, and other major/minor special procedures.
  • Assist the practitioner with other interventional cases by scrubbing in or circulating in the procedure room.
  • Anticipate the need for instruments and pass them as required.
  • Be responsible for post-processing of images, as well as all associated paperwork and computer tracking.
  • Send images to Picture Archiving and Communication Systems (PACS).
  • Operate specialized equipment, including the GE INNOVA 4100 digital subtraction computer, MEDRAD power injector, EKOS peripheral and neuro control units, ANGIOJET unit, Penumbra Device, Philips MD4, and GE Logic 9 Ultrasound unit, and Sonosite Ultrasound unit.
  • Send images to PACS and print laser film as necessary.
  • Prepare reports and maintain records of services rendered.
  • Ensure proper charge codes are on the requisitions.
  • Order and track in LifeChart.
  • Ensure proper input in HI-IQ data system.
  • Review available clinical data from LifeChart to alert nurses and/or physicians to possible contraindications for procedure.
  • Prepare drapes and position the patient.
  • Relies on knowledge of anatomy, physiology, and effects of disease processes to properly and safely position the patient for maximum diagnostic yield.
  • Observe for reaction to iodine contrast injection.
  • Maintain aseptic/sterile conditions.
  • Ensure functional integrity of equipment.
  • Maintain radiographic equipment, x-ray rooms, and other assigned areas in orderly and clean working condition.
  • Report malfunctions and necessary repairs to Medical Engineering Department manager and other service providers as necessary.
  • Ensure the correct billing of patient accounts, working in conjunction with the interventional practitioner.
  • Order and track in LifeChart.
  • Accurately charge all medical/surgical items requiring charges as noted by charge slips.
  • Ensure accurate input in HI-IQ data system.
  • Set up surgical trays, supplies, and equipment.
  • Adjust immobilization devices and assemble equipment, supplies as required.
  • Clean and send instruments to Central Supply as needed.
  • Prepare and clean laboratory and equipment using appropriate hospital disinfectants.
  • Work closely with the interventional radiologist to plan and adjust the exam schedule and plan necessary special supplies.
  • Check stock inventory, initiate orders, and restock supplies.
  • Maintain expiration dates per Shelf Life of Supplies policy A-11.
  • Perform duties of X-ray technologist involving the most advanced X-ray techniques using both fixed and portable equipment.
  • Maintain quality assurance, safety, environmental, infection control, and aseptic standards in assigned area in accordance with established hospital department policies, procedures, and objectives.
  • Perform all essential functions with consideration of the age-specific needs of the geriatric adult and adolescent patient.
  • Foster patient and family-centered care and Imaging services in accordance with Brown University Health and The Miriam Hospitals mission, vision, values, with consideration of the life span, including all developmental stages, as well as cultural patterns.
Requirements
  • Completion of formal training in an AMA-approved School of Radiologic Technology or equivalent.
  • Must maintain a current license to work in the State of Rhode Island.
  • Must hold current ARRT certification.
  • Three months training in aseptic techniques and training in specialized catheterization studies.
  • Must have interpersonal skills to interact effectively with patients who may be under physical and/or emotional stress and to instruct students and employees in angiography techniques.
  • Analytical skills to compile and interpret routine data and organize work.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and skills necessary to provide care to patients throughout the life span with consideration of aging processes, human development states, and cultural patterns in each step of the care process.
  • One year of Angiography experience preferred.
Work Environment and Physical Requirements

Healthcare environment such as acute care hospitals, physicians' offices, and ancillary healthcare enterprises. Works with medical equipment and has direct patient contact. Any potential hazards are minimized by adherence to established safety procedures and precautions, including use of safety equipment and protective clothing.

Prolonged sitting, standing, and walking. Exposed to all patient elements. May be required to lift/turn patients and equipment. Repeated bending, squatting, stooping. Wears lead aprons/glasses for long periods of time.
