Key Responsibilities
The Nurse Resident will be accountable for delivering comprehensive nursing care to designated age-specific populations. This role involves utilizing the nursing process, which includes assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation, to fulfill the objectives of the nursing department. Nurse Residents will work under the close supervision of a preceptor throughout the training program, transitioning to independent practice upon successful completion.
Definition of Nurse Resident: A Nurse Resident is an individual who has recently graduated from nursing school, is newly licensed, or is an experienced RN transitioning to the acute care environment.
At Northern Arizona Healthcare, we are looking for engaged learners who can meet the following expectations:
- A strong commitment to learning and personal/professional development.
- Active participation in all educational settings, including clinical, online, and classroom environments.
- Timely completion of assignments as designated by the residency coordinator.
- Exemplary professionalism in punctuality, attendance, behavior, teamwork, and communication.
Program Highlights
Nurse Residents must possess a valid nursing license prior to the commencement of the program. It is highly recommended that applicants schedule their NCLEX exam at the earliest opportunity.
Nurse Residents will engage in orientation sessions, training on the CERNER Electronic Medical Record (EMR), Basic ECG Interpretation, and ACLS certification.
Northern Arizona Healthcare offers a hybrid learning environment tailored to various learning styles, incorporating:
- Clinical Learning:
• Pairing with experienced preceptors for clinical shifts.
• Scheduled shifts based on the classroom calendar.
• Regular check-ins with preceptors and educators.
• Setting and achieving mutually agreed-upon clinical goals. - Synchronous Learning:
• Weekly learning labs featuring expert-led discussions, simulations, and interactive learning. - Asynchronous Learning:
• Online modules focused on specialty areas and facility-specific policies.
New Initiative for Nurse Residents
To support ongoing development, Nurse Residents and their cohorts will participate in a continued learning plan for one year following their hire date. This schedule accommodates shift work and includes a 4-hour module or in-person class every four weeks, providing additional opportunities for clinical learning and professional growth.
Qualifications
Requirements:
- Valid Arizona RN license by the start date of the residency program.
- BLS certification is mandatory.
- Nurse Residents must complete ACLS training prior to independent practice, which will be provided during the residency.
Education:
- Associate Degree in Nursing is required.
- New hires must enroll in a BSN program within one year of hire and complete it within five years.
- Existing staff RNs hired before a specified date are encouraged to consider BSN programs but are not mandated to obtain one.
Certifications:
- Current, unrestricted RN license in Arizona is required.
- BLS certification from the American Heart Association is required.
On-Call Requirements: On-call duties may be necessary depending on departmental needs.
