Position Overview:
Are you skilled in the maintenance and repair of heavy and light machinery? Do you possess a strong foundation in gas, diesel, and electrical systems? If so, Whatcom County is eager to explore your qualifications for a vital role within our Public Works Department.
This position is essential for ensuring the safety of our workforce and maintaining seamless operations by servicing and repairing a diverse fleet of over 600 vehicles and equipment, including the Lummi Island ferry.
Key Responsibilities:
- Conducting routine and emergency inspections, maintenance, and repairs on gas, diesel, and hybrid fleet vehicles.
- Utilizing diagnostic tools and equipment for troubleshooting purposes.
- Installing complex systems and components, such as air conditioning, anti-lock braking systems, and airbags.
- Preparing service orders and coordinating work schedules with clients, parts suppliers, and vendors.

This role operates on a 4-10 schedule, from 6:00 am to 4:30 pm, Monday through Friday.
Compensation:
Salary is based on the MCBA- Range 150.1. The hiring rate will depend on qualifications, with annual pay increases (approximately 3.8%) subject to satisfactory performance, in addition to any negotiated Cost of Living Adjustments (COLA).
Qualifications:
- A high school diploma or GED is required, along with three years of recent experience in the maintenance and repair of heavy and light-duty equipment.
- Advanced training and experience in electronic systems are mandatory.
- Experience with complex hydraulic, air conditioning, and electronic diagnostics is essential.
- Machinist experience is preferred.
- A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) endorsement is preferred and may be required.
Additional Requirements:
Applicants must possess a valid driver's license at the time of hire and maintain it throughout employment. A driving record that meets County standards is necessary. Candidates must also have a certified WA State Flagging and Traffic Control Card and provide their own tools, except for specialized types. Eligibility to cross between the United States and Canada is required.
