Job Summary

We are seeking a skilled Diesel Mechanic to join our team at Hire Military Talent. As a Diesel Mechanic, you will be responsible for inspecting and servicing diesel locomotives, diagnosing malfunctions, and repairing or replacing components as needed.

Key Responsibilities
  • Inspect and service diesel locomotives to ensure compliance with company, federal, and industry standards.
  • Diagnose and repair malfunctions in diesel engines, air brake systems, fuel systems, and other mechanical issues.
  • Efficiently operate equipment, including measuring instruments, precision machines, hand tools, and material handling equipment.
  • Communicate technical information and job-related details with colleagues and supervisors.
  • Read and interpret diagrams, schematics, graphs, and charts, and input data into a computer as needed.
  • Ensure all equipment and materials are available and ready for use.
  • Develop and maintain positive working relationships with colleagues, supervisors, and customers.
  • Ensure compliance with railroad rules and regulations for safety, operations, and Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) requirements.
Requirements
  • Basic keyboarding skills and basic mathematic skills.
  • 4 years of education or work experience as a mechanic, or a combination of both, repairing trucks, ships, farm equipment, airplanes, trains, automobiles, or diesels.
  • Proficient verbal and written communication skills to deliver information to colleagues and supervisors.
  • Valid driver's license.
  • Experience making quick and accurate visual inspections at near and far distances.
  • Experience reading and understanding instructions, including operating and safety rules, bulletins, special instructions, and federal regulatory documents.
  • Candidates must pass a pre-employment Diesel Mechanic Aptitude Test and qualify on a Physical Ability Test (PAT) prior to employment, background check, and drug/alcohol testing.
Preferred Qualifications
  • An Associate-Degree in a mechanical related field.
  • Certified and/or licensed as a diesel mechanic by the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence (ASE).
  • Completed a formal auto/diesel engine training program.
  • Experience as a mechanic in other fields, such as military, aviation, nuclear, or marine.
  • Experience welding or a welding certificate.
  • Experience working outdoors in variable weather conditions.
  • Experience working in an environment that requires personal protective equipment.
  • Experience working with, on, and around moving heavy equipment.
