San Francisco, California, United States Coinbase Developer Platform Full time

In recent years, the essential technology necessary for cryptocurrency to supplant conventional payment systems has finally emerged: stablecoins, efficient Layer 2 networks, and the Coinbase Smart Wallet. This presents a multi-billion dollar opportunity for Coinbase to transform the payments sector by capitalizing on its premier position in onchain development and extensive knowledge of existing fiat systems.

This position is for the lead engineer of the team dedicated to this new Onchain Payments initiative, which will encompass both 0-1 product development and enhancements to the existing Coinbase Commerce platform. Consider this team as a start-up within Coinbase, aiming to discover product-market fit for a groundbreaking approach to payments.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Develop a 0-to-1 product to revolutionize the global payment infrastructure with cryptocurrency solutions.
  • Oversee the fullstack design and implementation of a secure, high-performance product utilizing TypeScript, Go, and Solidity.
  • Quickly prototype user experiences to gather market insights and adapt as needed, transitioning code to production as required.
  • Integrate with various existing Coinbase platforms, including Smart Wallet, Commerce, and Platform APIs.
  • Design, implement, and promote a novel open-source web3 payment protocol using Solidity.
  • Collaborate closely with product managers, designers, and other cross-functional partners to identify product-market fit.
  • Utilize, maintain, and enhance an existing legacy codebase of Coinbase Commerce.
  • Champion engineering best practices, ensuring operational excellence and proper maintenance of legacy systems.
  • Optimize both frontend and backend performance, ensuring rapid transaction processing, seamless UI interactions, and efficient resource use.
  • Diagnose and resolve complex fullstack issues, ensuring platform stability, reliability, and security.
  • Provide technical leadership and support to the entire engineering team, contributing to the overall technical strategy of Coinbase.

Qualifications:

  • 8+ years of experience in software development with a strong emphasis on fullstack development; 2+ years in a leadership role within a crypto start-up is advantageous.
  • Expertise in Go, JavaScript, TypeScript, and Solidity; familiarity with Ruby is a plus.
  • Proven history of swiftly delivering high-quality fullstack systems.
  • In-depth knowledge of Ethereum and EVM-compatible chains, with experience in developing smart contracts.
  • Demonstrated commitment to exceptional developer experiences and open-source contributions, particularly in relation to cryptocurrency and payments.
  • Strong proficiency in frontend development using modern frameworks such as React and Angular.
  • Solid understanding of distributed systems, microservices architecture, and event-driven architectures, including experience with databases (PostgreSQL, MySQL, MongoDB), caching systems (Redis, Memcached), and message queues (Kafka, RabbitMQ).
  • Experience with developer operations, including cloud providers like AWS and containerization technologies such as Kubernetes.
  • Thorough understanding of web security best practices and experience implementing secure coding practices for financial applications.
  • Exceptional problem-solving abilities and a knack for finding elegant solutions to complex challenges in the cryptocurrency payment processing landscape.
  • Outstanding communication, leadership, and collaboration skills, with the ability to inspire and mentor teams.
  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or equivalent experience.
