Job Overview

We are in search of outstanding Physical Scientists and Engineers with expertise in disciplines such as plasma physics, radiation transport, atomic physics, nuclear physics, physical chemistry, condensed matter physics, computational physics, or hydrodynamics. Our mission in national security involves various aspects of computational, theoretical, and experimental physics related to the intricate processes of nuclear explosives. In this role, you will work under limited supervision to enhance our understanding and devise methodologies for significant national-security challenges. This position is situated within the Design Physics Division of the Strategic Deterrence Directorate.

This role may be filled at either level, contingent upon knowledge and relevant experience as evaluated by the hiring team. Additional responsibilities (detailed below) will be assigned if selected for the higher level.

Key Responsibilities

  • Analyze the intricate physics interactions occurring during nuclear explosions.
  • Design and conduct experiments to investigate the physics of nuclear explosives.
  • Simulate weapon phenomena and execute assessment and certification tasks utilizing physical models in computational codes.
  • Define and implement stockpile stewardship for designated weapon systems.
  • Present and share research findings at scientific conferences and in peer-reviewed publications, in both open and classified settings, internally and externally. Responsibilities may also involve engaging with external stakeholders, including those at DOE/NNSA and across the broader interagency, as well as through offsite assignments.
  • Cultivate expertise in interconnected fields of physics crucial to weapon assessment and certification.
  • Travel minimally or extensively based on project requirements.
  • Promote and support initiatives that foster a culture of inclusion, diversity, equity, and accountability within the workplace.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.

Additional Responsibilities at the Level

  • Independently develop, evaluate, and provide comprehensive analysis of the complex physics interactions involved in nuclear explosions where problems may not be clearly defined.
  • Serve as a technical expert on a multidisciplinary team.
  • Lead the analysis and design of experiments focused on the physics of nuclear explosives.

Required Qualifications

  • Ability to obtain and maintain a DOE Q-level security clearance, which necessitates citizenship.
  • PhD in physics, engineering, or a related discipline, or equivalent demonstrated knowledge.
  • Proven track record of conducting exceptional research in relevant physics and engineering fields.
  • Experience with computer-based design and experimental analysis.
  • Demonstrated capability to master new physics domains; a history of creativity, physical insight, and comprehensive understanding in applying complex physical processes.
  • Experience utilizing advanced computational facilities for applied physics analysis and conducting research.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills necessary for authoring technical and scientific reports, publications, and delivering scientific presentations.
  • Experience working effectively both independently and within a multidisciplinary research team.
  • Demonstrated self-motivation and initiative in tackling challenging problems.
  • Commitment to promoting and valuing principles of inclusion, diversity, equity, and accountability in the workplace.

  • Advanced knowledge in physics, engineering, or a related field.
  • Significant experience and capability to lead independent applied physics research.

Security Clearance Requirement

This position necessitates a Department of Energy (DOE) Q-level clearance.
