Job Summary

We are seeking a highly motivated and detail-oriented Surgical Technologist Assistant to join our team at UnityPoint Health. As a Surgical Technologist Assistant, you will play a vital role in ensuring the smooth operation of our operating rooms and providing exceptional patient care.

Key Responsibilities
  • Assist in creating a positive work environment by mentoring staff and students, and working with team members to develop and facilitate initiatives to strive for positive outcomes in quality and care of patients.
  • Comply with all policies and procedures, and guide team members with compliance.
  • Reliable attendance is an expectation of the team member role, as well as a leader in the unit.
Professional Growth
  • Assume responsibility for continued growth in areas of competencies, lifelong learning and involvement in unit and hospital quality of care projects. Specialty certifications and continuing education are strongly encouraged.
  • Support the use of Evidenced Based Practice and incorporate best practices into daily care routine.
  • Participate in mandatory education and unit meetings per established guidelines.
  • Comply with all safety goals, infection prevention and risk management policies and procedures.
  • Complete annual mandatory education.
Communication
  • Communicate utilizing the FOCUS standards in all aspects of care and interactions with others.
  • Effectively communicate with all team members, physicians, ancillary staff and all customers. Verbal communication is clear and concise, and written communication is legible and done using approved abbreviations.
Collaboration
  • Practice indicates compliance with HIPAA, DNV, OSHA and all other regulatory agencies.
  • Demonstrate the ability to be flexible in meeting needs of the unit as a team member.
Operating Room Functions
  • Demonstrate an ability to perform all duties required of an Assistant Surgical Technician in accordance with established procedures as required.
  • Assist in carrying-out safe aseptic techniques and procedures as outlined in the Operating Room Policy & Procedure manuals; observe and report contamination and/or breaks in aseptic techniques.
  • Assist in the maintenance and handling of special instruments and equipment.
  • Always maintain responsibility for ensuring safe patient care.
  • Utilize patient care and unit supplies in a manner that is both patient care and cost-effective.
Requirements
  • High school graduate or equivalent preferred.
  • Must be enrolled in an approved Surgical Technology program.
  • None
  • Preferred Experience: Prior hospital and/or office experience desirable.
  • Certification is encouraged.
  • Must be BCLS certified through AHA upon hire or within 90 days from the date of hire.
  • Must be able to meet the competency of unit assigned to and be able to successfully complete orientation.
  • Must be able to meet reliable attendance guidelines.
  • Must be able to perform the essential functions of the job, including ability to communicate effectively.
  • Able to distinguish colors.
  • Able to read, write, comprehend, and speak English.
