Position Summary
The Radiation Therapist plays a crucial role in administering radiation treatment to patients as part of a collaborative healthcare team, which includes radiation oncologists, physicists, dosimetrists, nurses, and support staff. This role is vital in planning and delivering effective treatment regimens.
Key Responsibilities
- Collaborate in tumor localization and treatment planning.
- Administer prescribed doses of ionizing radiation while ensuring patient safety and treatment accuracy.
- Address the physical and emotional needs of patients throughout their treatment journey.
- Maintain a comprehensive understanding of cancer treatment, radiation safety, and therapy techniques.
- Utilize critical thinking to assist in treatment planning and resolve any equipment or treatment discrepancies.
- Anticipate patient needs and consult with physicians when necessary.
Clinical Competencies
- Deliver optimal radiation therapy treatments, including CT/Sim and conventional simulations.
- Review and verify patient treatment records and dosages daily to adhere to prescribed limits.
- Communicate effectively with patients regarding their treatment, including skin care and self-care instructions.
- Ensure accuracy in patient setup and treatment delivery, including verifying console settings.
Quality Assurance
- Document all treatment and patient data accurately, including any deviations from established protocols.
- Maintain quality assurance documentation and report equipment maintenance needs promptly.
- Engage in ongoing education to enhance clinical skills and maintain necessary certifications.
Work Environment
- Foster a collaborative atmosphere with healthcare team members to ensure high-quality patient care.
- Participate in on-call duties as scheduled and perform additional responsibilities as required.
Qualifications
- Graduate of an accredited radiation therapy program; a two-year certificate is required, with a bachelor's degree preferred.
- Licensed by the relevant state board of examiners in radiation therapy.
