Job Title: Evidence and Records Custodian

Job Summary:

We are seeking a highly organized and detail-oriented Evidence and Records Custodian to join our team at New Mexico State University. The successful candidate will be responsible for maintaining the integrity of evidence and records, ensuring compliance with state and federal regulations, and providing exceptional customer service to internal and external stakeholders.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Maintain the chain of custody of evidence and records, including intake, classification, storage, retrieval, inspections, and release.
  • Process requests from courts, prosecutors, and defense counsel.
  • Issue, receive, process, and audit police citations.
  • Handle requests from the public for copies of police records and related services.
  • Categorize and maintain crime statistics information for the university system.
  • Ensure compliance with state and federal regulations.
Requirements:
  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Two years of experience related to the standard duties as outlined.
  • Knowledge of administrative and clerical procedures, office telephone etiquette, and general accounting principles.
  • Skills in reading, spelling, and simple arithmetic, basic filing and recordkeeping, and operation of office machines.
  • Ability to gather data, compile information, and prepare reports, communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, and analyze and solve problems.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Knowledge of records management, evidence processing, audit procedures, Clery Act requirements, and general knowledge of law enforcement/departmental operations.
Working Conditions:

Work is normally performed in a typical interior/office work environment. Light physical effort is required, with occasional lifting of average-weight objects up to 25 pounds or standing and/or walking for more than four hours per day.
