Job Summary

Key Responsibilities
  • Provide circulation assistance to library customers, including checking out and returning materials, answering research questions, and resolving customer issues.
  • Perform essential public service support tasks, such as sorting and shelving materials, alphabetizing books, and maintaining the library collection.
  • Assist with maintenance of the library collection, including retrieving and processing daily circulation reports.
  • Support library programs and events, including outreach and other activities.
  • Develop and maintain good working relationships with customers and staff, promoting a positive and inclusive library environment.
Requirements
  • High school graduation or possession of a GED issued by a state department of education.
  • One year of full-time experience or the equivalent amount of part-time experience working or volunteering in a library, or one year of full-time experience or the equivalent amount of part-time experience providing customer service.
  • Ability to lift up to 15 lbs, input, access, and retrieve information from a computer, and perform repetitive hand, arm, wrist, and shoulder movements.
  • Ability to stand for 2 hours at a time, shelve materials at all height levels, stoop, bend, reach, squat, and kneel.
  • Ability to travel to various locations throughout Fairfax County to provide coverage, attend meetings, and trainings.
Preferred Qualifications
  • At least six months of experience working with and assisting the public in a library setting.
  • At least one year of experience providing customer service.
  • At least six months of experience assisting the public in a library setting.
  • At least six months of experience working with automated library systems/software.
  • At least six months of experience explaining library policies and procedures.
Selection Procedure

A panel interview and may include an exercise. We encourage candidates bilingual in English and a foreign language to apply to this opportunity.
