Job Description

Job Summary:

A Respiratory Therapist is responsible for providing high-quality patient care in a fast-paced hospital environment. The ideal candidate will have a strong foundation in respiratory therapy, with the ability to work effectively in a team setting. Key responsibilities include performing arterial blood gas analysis, conducting patient assessments, and managing ventilator therapy. Additionally, the successful candidate will be skilled in cardiopulmonary resuscitation, bronchial hygiene, and oxygen administration.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Supports and promotes the mission and values of Covenant Health Ministry.
  • Documents all respiratory therapy treatments in the electronic medical record (EMR) using the charge on documentation system.
  • Initial notes include thorough assessments and proper initiation of therapist-driven protocols.
  • Follows therapeutic goals outlined through Therapist-Driven Protocol (TDP).
  • Paperwork completed for oncoming shifts, ensuring Cardex and treatment cards are thoroughly completed.
  • Clearly and accurately completes extended therapy sheets for EMR downtime and special procedure forms.
  • Orders derived from TDP are entered/updated in EMR.
  • Patient/family education is documented in EMR.
  • Performs critical care procedures, including Spontaneous Breathing Trials and cuff pressure checks.
  • Works as a team member and communicates effectively with staff and physicians.
  • Makes recommendations concerning ventilator parameters and weaning potential.
  • Displays competency in all modes of ventilatory support.
  • Charge duties include distributing workload amongst staff and organizing/prioritizing work on shift.
  • Exhibits good judgment in independent decision-making as relates to clarification of orders for respiratory therapy procedures.
  • Communicates all problems to Manager Respiratory & Pulmonary Services.
  • Takes appropriate steps when faced with a void in staffing according to departmental policy.

Job Requirements:

Education and Experience

  • Current NH license as a Respiratory Care Practitioner, RCP, required.
  • Basic Life Support required.
  • National Board of Respiratory Care (NBRC) certification.
  • Must have experience in the above therapeutic modalities and display ability to work in a team environment.

Working Conditions/Physical Demands

The Respiratory Therapist must possess the physical and mental abilities to perform the tasks normally associated with this position, which involves a combination of sitting, standing, walking, bending, stooping, and reaching. Lifting/carrying frequently up to 35 pounds, and occasionally up to 50 pounds. Some stress related to high-level responsibility for quality care.
