- Position Summary
The Blood Collection Specialist is responsible for performing blood draws and processing specimens, as well as assisting with clerical tasks as needed. This role is crucial in maintaining laboratory turnaround times and ensuring the quality of specimens collected.
Essential Duties - Ensure accurate patient identification in all job functions.
- Demonstrate kindness and professionalism in all interactions with patients and colleagues, fostering effective communication within the department and across the hospital.
- Adhere to isolation and hand hygiene protocols.
- Execute blood collection procedures, performing venous and capillary punctures on diverse patient populations, while following established techniques to secure quality samples.
- Conduct Blood Bank collections, following prescribed protocols and maintaining accuracy in documentation.
- Keep phlebotomy trays, stations, and storage areas organized and clean.
- Manage laboratory turnaround times by prioritizing tasks and organizing draw requests efficiently.
- Assist in training new phlebotomy staff under the guidance of supervisors or coordinators.
- Process and distribute specimens to the appropriate testing areas within the laboratory.
- Utilize sound judgment in problem-solving and seek assistance when necessary.
- Take ownership of departmental workflow, collaborating with team members to enhance efficiency and teamwork.
Required Education and Experience
High School diploma or equivalent.
Required Licensure and Certifications
California: PHLEB:CA
Nevada: PHLEB:NV
Washington: MAP:WA
Other states not required
BLS-CPR certification upon hire/transfer.
Preferred Certification
Phlebotomy certification is preferred.
Required Skills and Abilities
Strong customer service and time management skills are essential.
