Labor Relations Counsel

The Air Line Pilots Association, International (ALPA), the foremost airline pilot union globally and a leading non-governmental aviation safety organization, is seeking a seasoned Labor Relations Counsel for our Atlanta office to advocate for over 16,500 Delta pilots. Operating with minimal direct oversight and adhering to Association policies, the Labor Relations Counsel offers guidance to pilot governing bodies and individual members on various employment-related matters. Collaborating with department managers, they leverage a deep understanding of relevant laws and extensive experience with Association policies to manage a wide array of intricate labor relations tasks, often under tight deadlines, and serve as a labor relations expert. Responsibilities also include providing support throughout the negotiation process; coordinating all negotiation activities while ensuring communication with all stakeholders; overseeing and enforcing contracts; managing FAA actions involving individual pilots; preparing summaries of NTSB Accident/Incident hearings; handling all case management duties; and potentially participating in national projects in the Washington, D.C. area. They must actively listen, foster trust, and adjust their approach to suit the audience. Occasionally, they may need to respond to urgent safety-related inquiries at any hour. Travel is significant and may occur on short notice.

Travel required: typically 20 – 40%; occasionally up to 50%.

Qualifications:

  • Juris Doctor (JD), Master of Law (LLM), or a similar advanced degree from an accredited law school is required.
  • Must be a member in good standing of the Bar.
  • A minimum of five (5) years of relevant experience in labor law and litigation is required; ten (10) years is preferred. Experience in aviation is advantageous.
  • Experience in collective bargaining, grievance handling, and arbitration is preferred.
  • Exceptional interpersonal and communication skills, both oral and written, for effective interaction with internal staff, external contacts, senior legal and aviation professionals, and pilots.
  • Proven ability to organize and manage long-term projects.
  • Demonstrated capacity to exercise independent judgment in decision-making and problem-solving under pressure and urgent circumstances.
  • Familiarity with the Railway Labor Act (RLA) and Federal Aviation Regulations (FARs) is preferred.
  • Experience with online legal research tools, such as Westlaw or equivalent, is preferred.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Word, Outlook, Excel, and PowerPoint.
  • Travel: typically 20 – 40%; occasionally up to 50%.
