The Engineering Science Division (ESD) of Applied Research Associates, Inc. (ARA) is in search of an Explosives Analytical Chemist/Technician. ARA's Engineering Science Division delivers research, development, testing, and evaluation services to the Department of Homeland Security (DHS). The ideal candidate will contribute to the DHS Transportation Security Laboratory (TSL) Detection Technology Center (DTC).
Key Responsibilities
- Assist in all explosive and contraband research at DTC, including the formulation of testing methodologies and plans for analytical instruments, utilizing analytical chemistry for quantitative chemical analysis.
- Contribute to the creation of test plans, reports, presentations, standard operating procedures, and other necessary documentation.
- Adhere to and revise existing, or create new, standard operating procedures (SOPs).
- Maintain qualifications in chemical, radiation, and laser safety, along with explosive handling as required by facility protocols and training.
- Bachelor's degree in chemistry with relevant experience, or an associate's degree in a scientific field with 2 years of related experience, or a high school diploma/GED with 4 years of relevant experience.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills, with a focus on teamwork, attention to detail, and customer service.
- Proficiency in MS Office applications.
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
- Willingness and eligibility to obtain a Security Clearance and DHS Suitability.
- Must be a U.S. citizen.
- Experience with techniques and equipment such as Thermogravimetric Analysis, Differential Scanning Calorimetry, High-Performance Liquid Chromatography, Particle Size Analysis, IR and Raman Spectroscopy, Various Titrations, and General Laboratory Best Practices.
- Possession of an active TOP SECRET Clearance.
- Demonstrated DHS Suitability.
