Licensed Practical Nurse

We are seeking a skilled Licensed Practical Nurse to join our team at SIU Medicine. As a key member of our healthcare team, you will provide direct nursing care and support to our patients, working closely with faculty, residents, staff, and patients to ensure an efficient operation.
Key Responsibilities- Prepares patient exam rooms and provides patient education on health care related to their diagnosis.
- Takes vital signs, reconciles allergies and medications, assesses smoking status, documents PHQ-2 score, and obtains a brief history of the patient.
- Assists doctors at the time of exam and with follow-up procedures, performs as a team leader for faculty physicians and resident physicians, and assists with preparation of medications and treatment as directed by physician.
- Follows up on doctor's orders by transcribing these in EHR and notifying the pharmacy when appropriate, performs various screening tests, and calls other facilities to set up appointments for x-rays or referral to other physicians.
- Assumes charge responsibility for a clinical unit when necessary, assists in the operation of respiratory equipment, and explains operation to patient.
- Records prescription refills and other pertinent medical information in patients' charts per phone conversations or through personal contacts following the medication refill guidelines.
- Performs walk-in blood pressures and other triage needs of the patients and records in chart, sterilizes instruments, and maintains proper maintenance of equipment.
- Performs EKG's, pulmonary functions test, Spirometry, pulse oximetry, nebulizer treatments, ear irrigations, obstetric non-stress test, and external fetal monitoring.
- Constantly updates on computer information availability, including the electronic health record system, insurance information, and patient education.
- Ensures lab diagnostic studies and hospital reports have been scanned into EHR and performs minor lab tests possibly including urine pregnancy tests and strep throat screens.
- Possession of a valid license as a Licensed Practical Nurse issued by the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation, Division of Professional Regulation.
- 6 months of nursing experience in a healthcare facility.
Pursuant to the State Universities Civil Service System, an out-of-state resident who is hired into this position must establish Illinois residency within 180 calendar days of their start date.
