The City of Bishop is currently seeking qualified candidates for the role of Auxiliary Police Officer within the Police Department. This part-time position will report directly to the Police Chief and designated supervisory personnel.

Salary Structure: The hourly wage for this position is set at $37.00, with variations based on experience. The work schedule is flexible, with a maximum of 20 hours per week.

Position Description

The Auxiliary Police Officer will engage in various law enforcement duties, categorized into three distinct levels:

  • Level III: Officers at this level may undertake limited support tasks under supervision, including the transportation of detainees.
  • Level II: These officers are authorized to perform general law enforcement functions under the direct oversight of a certified peace officer, including patrolling, responding to incidents, and enforcing laws.
  • Level I: Officers at this level can operate independently and execute the same responsibilities as full-time officers upon successful completion of a certified training program.

Supervision: This role will receive guidance from the Police Chief, Police Lieutenant, and other designated supervisors.

Key Responsibilities

The following tasks are essential functions of the position, which may include but are not limited to:

  • Conducting patrols in various modes (vehicle, bicycle, foot) to deter and identify criminal activity.
  • Responding to communications and citizen inquiries, investigating reported incidents.
  • Collecting and preserving evidence for investigations.
  • Addressing traffic issues and safety hazards.
  • Issuing warnings or citations for violations.
  • Managing traffic flow during incidents and events.
  • Preparing detailed reports on incidents and investigations.
  • Maintaining public order during gatherings or conflicts.
  • Providing assistance and information to the community.
  • Apprehending suspects and ensuring their rights are upheld.
  • Administering first aid in emergencies until professional medical help arrives.
  • Participating in community outreach programs to educate the public on safety and police functions.
  • Responding to calls for service at any time during assigned shifts.

Qualifications

Knowledge Required:

  • Understanding of traffic laws, safety regulations, and municipal codes.
  • Familiarity with police department protocols and procedures.
  • Awareness of legal standards governing law enforcement actions.
  • Knowledge of first aid practices.
  • Insight into crime prevention strategies and investigative techniques.
  • Proficiency in communication protocols and radio operations.
  • Familiarity with local geography and crime patterns.

Skills and Abilities:

  • Ability to pass physical and psychological evaluations.
  • Effective teamwork and communication skills.
  • Capacity to remain focused in high-pressure situations.
  • Adherence to safety protocols.
  • Ability to work in varying weather conditions.
  • Competence in completing accurate reports and documentation.

Experience and Training:

Applicants must meet specific training requirements based on the level of position applied for, including completion of designated modules of the Regular Basic Course.

Licenses:

  • Possession of a valid driver's license is required.
