Position Overview

You will play a vital role in safeguarding lives and property for the residents of Pennington County. The Black Hills region is renowned for its stunning landscapes, year-round recreational activities, and is an excellent environment for family life. Deputies will work 10-hour shifts on a rotating schedule every six months. Prior service experience will be considered for all opportunities after two years of employment.

Key Responsibilities
  • Conducting patrols throughout the county to prevent and address criminal activity, enforce laws, and investigate suspicious behaviors while ensuring the safety of life and property.
  • Responding to radio calls, including domestic disturbances, arrests, burglaries, traffic incidents, and assisting lost or stranded individuals.
  • Carrying out investigations for assigned cases, gathering evidence, identifying and apprehending suspects, and interviewing involved parties.
  • Examining crime scenes to collect evidence, documenting findings through photographs, and performing fingerprint analysis.
  • Locating and arresting individuals with active warrants or who are violating laws.
  • Preparing detailed reports and providing testimony in court as needed.
  • Transporting individuals in custody to various facilities, including courtrooms and medical establishments.
  • Assisting with the execution of civil processes and court orders.
  • Maintaining the ability to serve as a credible witness in legal proceedings.
  • Performing additional duties as assigned.
Qualifications

Testing Requirements: Candidates must meet minimum physical agility standards and achieve a passing score on the written examination prior to the interview process.
Education: High school diploma or GED required.
Age: Must be at least 21 years old.
Experience: Previous law enforcement experience is preferred but not mandatory.
Licensure: Must obtain a valid South Dakota Driver's License within 90 days of residency.
Certification: Candidates must possess South Dakota Law Enforcement Certification or be eligible for reciprocity.
Physical Agility Standards: All candidates must meet the following benchmarks, regardless of age or gender:
  • 1.5 Mile Run: Completion within 16:30 minutes.
  • 30 Sit-ups in one minute.
  • 18 Push-ups in one minute.
Background Check: All candidates must successfully pass a comprehensive background investigation, including medical, physical, written, and psychological evaluations. Disqualification may occur at any stage of the hiring process at the discretion of the Chief Deputy or Human Resources Manager.
