Job Title: Driver Apprentice-City

Job Summary:

We are seeking a highly motivated and detail-oriented Driver Apprentice-City to join our team at FedEx Freight. As a Driver Apprentice-City, you will be responsible for assisting experienced drivers with daily operations, learning the skills and knowledge necessary to become a proficient driver, and performing various tasks related to freight handling and logistics.

Responsibilities:

  • Assist experienced drivers with daily operations, including loading and unloading freight, and performing pre-trip and post-trip inspections.
  • Learn and demonstrate proficiency in the operation of a tractor trailer combination, including hooking and unhooking trailers and converter dollies.
  • Perform freight handling tasks, such as counting and verifying freight, and securing freight inside trailers.
  • Assist with customer service, including answering questions and resolving issues related to freight and logistics.
  • Comply with all applicable laws and regulations, as well as company policies and procedures.

Requirements:

  • Must possess a Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) or a commercial learning permit (CLP) prior to entering the job classification.
  • Must possess an acceptable Motor Vehicle Record (MVR) based on hiring standards.
  • Must meet all Department of Transportation (DOT) regulatory requirements under section 391 of the Federal Motor Carrier (FMC) regulations.
  • Ability to count and perform basic math, with or without a calculator.
  • Basic written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to lift and carry hand freight of varying weights, and to open trailer doors requiring approximately 75 pounds of lift force.

Working Conditions:

  • Exposure to noise and vibration.
  • Exposure to dust and diesel fumes.
  • Exposure to hazardous materials shipped and packaged under DOT regulations.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Previous experience in the transportation or logistics industry.
  • Knowledge of DOT regulations and procedures.

Factors that may be used to determine your actual salary may include your specific skills, your work location, how many years of experience you have, and comparison to other employees already in this role.
