Job Summary

The English as a Second Language (ESL) Educator position at Columbus State Community College is responsible for providing high-quality instruction and maintaining a supportive learning environment in virtual and in-person classes. This role teaches Basic English as a Second Language topics, including grammar, reading, writing, pronunciation, vocabulary, and technology, as directed by the Language Institute (LI) Supervisor.

Key Responsibilities
  • Instruction
    • Develop and implement learning activities that support course objectives and cater to student needs.
    • Provide engaging opportunities for students to experience success through academic activities.
    • Maintain a safe, supportive, and inclusive learning environment.
    • Assist students with questions and provide guidance on assignments and classroom activities.
  • Classroom & Student Support
    • Keep accurate and up-to-date records of attendance and scores in accordance with established College and departmental policies and procedures.
    • Handle student concerns with respect, following guidelines, processes, and procedures, and escalate any issues to the LI Supervisor or Director.
  • Diversity, Equity & Inclusion
    • Ensure the College meets its responsibilities in identifying areas of opportunity and systemic concerns while reporting complaints alleging discrimination.
    • Create a welcoming, inclusive, equitable, and productive work and learning environment where all students, faculty members, and college employees feel valued and can contribute to their full potential.
    • Ensure accessible and inclusive curriculum design and teaching strategies, promoting diversity and equity in the learning environment.
    • Foster and maintain a safe environment of respect and inclusion for faculty, staff, students, and members of the community.
    Qualifications
    • Bachelor's Degree in English, a world language, Communication, or a related field.
    • One (1) year of ESL teaching or adult learning organization experience.
    • State Motor Vehicle Operator's License or demonstrable ability to gain access to work site(s).
    Preferred Qualification
    • Master's degree in TESOL or a related field, or TESOL/TESL/TEFL certification; significant ESOL teaching experience; demonstrated excellence in an adult learning organization.
